I always believed that I would write a book. Story-lines flashed through my mind even as a child walking home from grade school on a frigid winter afternoon. I remembered the beauty of a newly fallen snow and it triggered my imagination to create stories about the neighborhoods I passed. In no time, I’d be home having entertained myself all the way. My sister reminded me that instead of reading stories to her when I babysat, I would make up stories. She never forgot the one about a young dancer who yearned for red ballet slippers but her family had no money. I rarely recorded my stories. When I did jot down an intriguing few paragraphs, there was no follow through. I saved my notes and moved on to a new interest. Suzonne of Twin Flames did not allow that. Scenes and dialog filled my brain. When I didn’t write it down, it continued to repeat until I did. However, there was a time limit. If after many opportunities, I had to write it down or run the risk of loosing it. It may or may not repeat weeks later. I could be driving down a highway with this unrelenting story having a field day in my thoughts. There were times when I pulled over to write as much as possible on a scrap of paper that happened to be in the console. Eventually I kept a spiral notebook on the passenger seat. I learned to take it everywhere: waiting rooms, shopping, the beach. I never knew when I would be given a thought that had to be captured. Many times I wrote the chapters until the wee hours, 3 or 4 AM. The next day after reading what I had written I said, “I wrote that? It’s really good!”

Chapter 40:
The Unthinkable
The dreaded day had come. This morning Camille and Madame Delisle’s departure would become a reality. Suzonne’s heart ached as she approached the dock clinging to Andre, her arm linked through his. There seated on their sea trunk filled only with the clothing Suzonne had given them, they looked forlorn. Camille spoke to her mother. "It’s easy to pack all of our belongings for this voyage of a lifetime when we have no belongings isn’t it, mama? Camille had secured their one and only personal possession before leaving for St. Pierre. She had sewn the proceeds from the sale of their family plantation into the bodice of her travel dress.
Suzonne’s Uncle Albert presented the Delisle ladies with a large hamper of both fresh and dried foods to sustain them on their six to eight week journey.
Bertin and Pauline added two baskets of fruit; one ripened and one green, loaves of bread and two crocks of water.
Though I’ve known you were leaving for some time, I’m no better prepared
, lamented Suzonne. You are more than my dearest friend, you are the sister I would have chosen for myself ...
she stopped, unable to continue.
Camille said, We are as sisters. Even so, I can’t come back here. You must come to me in Paris one day. Please say you will! Letters alone will not fill the gap of not seeing one another.
They locked together in a long, tight hug. Suzonne spoke with a hoarse voice. This is not good bye. I know we’ll see each other again. I won’t; I can’t say good bye to you.
They pulled apart with tears flowing. Suzonne said, I have two parting gifts for you.
She handed Camille a tin of dried herbs. Rutah says this will cure sea illness, though I pray you won’t have need of it. And here is the necklace I’m so pleased to give to you.
She handed her the pirate’s pouch.
Camille pulled out the magnificent sapphire and emerald necklace and shook her head. It’s far too valuable a gift but I know so well that you’ve made up your mind. Thank you, with all my heart, dearest Suzonne.
The color drained from Andre’s face. Suzonne, you are most generous. The selling price from that one piece of irreplaceable jewelry will purchase a very grand chateau.
It belonged to a pirate. I found it the same day I found you. It’s comforting for me that Camille never wants for anything in Paris.
I understand.
Andre said quietly.
I don’t!
said Adeline. Raphael squeezed her arm to be quiet.
The group of friends stood talking with Camille as she and her mother waited for the passenger skiff.
Andre excused himself to lean on a rum cask in the shade. He noticed a man from another ship who watched him with great interest. When the man approached him, Andre showed no surprise.
Monsieur, is it you? We feared the worst! When no ransom was demanded, we thought that you had been killed.
Andre looked at him, offering no response, causing the man to address him with more intensity.
The fleet has been searching for you. The family will be relieved to learn you have survived what must have been a terrible ordeal. I see that you have been injured. Monsieur, are you yourself? Do you know me?
Andre flatly replied, Yes, Gontier, I know you.
They continued to speak at length in muffled tones.
Suzonne called out, Andre, the skiff is coming!
Andre joined them on the pier to encircle his arms around Camille and kiss her cheek. Godspeed, Camille.
Camille smiled. Andre, I’m happy you were released from the hospital in time to say goodbye.
After sharing more last minute words of affection and well-wishes, Raphael and Andre carefully lowered Madame Delisle into the arms of two awaiting sailors in the skiff. When she was seated, the trunk and provisions were loaded.
Look Camille. Look at your mother,
said Suzonne.
Madame Delisle had tears flowing down her cheeks as she looked about St. Pierre’s landscape.
Oh, mama, you know we’re leaving Martinique, don’t you?
Camille stepped into the skiff to sit beside her mother, brushing away tears with her hand. She weeps every time I do.
Suzonne hung on to Andre while she watched the last of the Delisle family being transported to the ship that would take them away ... forever. I think Madame knew she was leaving. I pray they find a good, new life.
You are a very special person, Suzonne. I hope you know that about yourself.
Andre kissed her cheek.
Only Andre
