Chapter 1
Lulu DuRoché was born to single parent Lyzette DuRoché. Lulu’s father was unknown to her. Growing up dirt-poor contributed unimaginable hardship to Lyzette’s unwed status and motherhood.
Unlike Lulu with one parent present, Lyzette was an orphan who ended up in the caring hands of Una and Zachary DuRoché who adopted her two days after birth.
As a child, Lyzette’s frequent rebellious and confrontational disposition made it quite challenging for the DuRoché family. Una and Zachary also cared for other children as their home was a foster home for young lives in limbo. As Lyzette got older she became less confrontational, but wanted more answers about her adoption status which Una and Zachary didn’t have much of. They however promised to help her find the answers when she became of legal age to acquire that information.
Frustrated and impatient, Lyzette decided to leave Una and Zachary’s care for uncertainty. She ended up at a group home where the conditions were unimaginable in comparison to the decent and comfortable home she had known. After enduring much suffering and sometimes abuse, Lyzette decided to flee from her rat-infested commune in search of a better life and home, but refused to return to the DuRoché‘s home because of shame. In her travels she experienced much resentment, deception, anger and danger. Many tried taking advantage of her innocence, but she always managed somehow to thwart their evil motives. Her beauty and streetwise intelligence were her only assets.
At the age of 17 she started to reinvent herself by frequenting new locales hoping its influence would somehow spill over to her side of the tracks. Lyzette more than occasionally wandered through upscale neighbourhoods to daydream. In spite of her pretentious and artificial posture while strolling among the upper class, to her spectators, she was just a meaningless anachronism in the wrong place and time.
On a glorious morning, as the bright golden sun pierced through the endless sky, Lyzette encountered a dashing nobleman of sort riding through the countryside of France. She quickly stepped away from the road in order for the gentleman to continue his ride uninterrupted. Instead he slowly came to a stop, dismounted from his horse and walked towards her and uttered Bonjour Mademoiselle
. Suddenly, silence was golden and he continued why are you walking the countryside of France without an escort?
An escort sir?
she replied. Why would anyone wish to be my escort?
Well, such radiant beauty alone out here is very dangerous, and if I may ask, what is your name?
My name is Lyzette and I am not worthy of your concern, sir. I possess nothing that you’d want or need, so why are you wasting your precious time with a stranger like me, sir?
On the contrary Mademoiselle. In fact, I find this quite interesting and refreshing. I am surprised and very lucky to be the sole beholder of such genuine beauty in contrast to the overbearing cities of France. May I introduce myself.?
he asked. I would be honored
Lyzette replied. I am Louis Dauphin at your service
he gentlemanly echoed as he removed his hat, bowing royally with absolute nobility. Lyzette was overcome with pride, yet wary of her sudden encounter. May I offer my blanket to surface a place of relaxation in exchange for some conversation?
Thank you sir, I am a bit tired from my journey and your kindness is most appreciated. Be warned, it would be for just a moment."
Lyzette was overwhelmed to meet such a man. He wore fancy boots, hand-tailored garments, exquisite manners, dashing personality, and seemed to be highly educated and perhaps an aristocrat. Lyzette felt that such a man would be impossible for her to befriend.
Lyzette and Louis engaged in conversation and found each other’s existence quite fascinating. Their lives were as diverse as night and day. After hours of decoding each other’s lives, Louis asked Lyzette if it would be possible to return to their place of encounter for another meeting. She promised to as she beamed from contentment. Louis kissed her hand as their eyes merged, forming this unlikely union. He mounted his horse and sped away. The thundering gallop of his equine’s muddy hooves echoed through the lush green pasture as he rode valiantly.
Lyzette returned to the orphanage/group-home to secretly rescue the remainder of her insignificant belongings and took shelter at an abandoned stable for the night. Feeling safe and secure, she waited patiently for her rendezvous with Louis the following day.
During the night, two drifters accidentally stumbled upon the abandoned stable and took shelter from the cool and moonless evening. They were unaware that their new found accommodations had already been claimed by a very frightened guest.
They drank throughout the night and told absurd stories to each other. Lyzette remained motionless at the opposite end of the stable hoping not to be discovered. One of the men said to the other during their story telling wouldn’t it be fascinating if we had an old whore from the streets of Paris to spend the cold night with?
Oh yes, we would certainly be a ménage à trois." ( a threesome) replied his friend. They looked at each other, paused in thought for a few seconds and laughed hysterically aloud. The sound of their haunting laughter made it impossible for Lyzette to stay calm at the other end of the stable.
She decided to flee silently during the night. She gathered her few belongings and successfully exited the stable without her uninvited guests knowing. As she calmly walked away and being absolutely careful, she accidentally walked into a tree stump and painfully voiced the sound of ouch
. The drifters yelled out who’s there?
but Lyzette kept walking. The men grabbed their lantern and rushed outside to encounter the intruder. They saw the silhouette of a woman fleeing from the stable and couldn’t believe their blurry eyes. They thought perhaps their drinking fiasco had somehow really affected their intoxicated vision, however, they decided to follow her.
They chased her through the woods like a pair of deranged wild hyenas screaming sexual innuendos. She knew the only way to win this scary marathon was by outsmarting her pursuers. Her knowledge of that area in particular proved absolutely vital to her perseverance to escape unharmed.
She led her pursuers through a maze of trees and unexpected creeks, but the men began gaining distance by the second. Lyzette had but one plan left and she immediately put it into effect. She headed towards what seemed to be a wall of vine and strategically went through it unscathed. Seconds later the bastards ran through the wall and collided head on with an old fence hidden inside the wall. With injuries from cuts, bruises, a broken arm and a sprained ankle, Lyzette had the means and opportunity to avenge herself against the pursuers.
Instead, she decided to help the injured fools. As they laid on the ground moaning from excruciating pain, Lyzette grabbed a thick branch to defend herself if necessary. She promised to help them if they would agree not to attack her. The injured men had little choice so they apologized and promised not to harm her. They declared that the chase was all in fun but Lyzette knew that they would have harmed her had they succeeded.
She ripped an old blouse from her possessions and made bandages for their wounds. She gathered herbs to form an antiseptic balm for their cuts and bruises. She made splints for their broken
