    Chapter 4

Brendan pulling up in his Plymouth. Slamming the gear selector lever into park. He headed to back of the trunk as a light Pennsylvania rain fell.

Sister St Marie with Sister Mary Margaret was sorting the food donations at the Catholic Mission kitchen. Brendan entered with another flat jubilant as ever.

Jesus has me. Heart and soul. You should know that Sister Mary Margaret. Brendan leant into Sister St Marie. But my pelvis belongs to Harlan.

God has blessed you with a happy heart and bountiful spirit. Mary Margaret replied. Trying to refrain.

Bountiful? Brendan mused. I've never heard it put quite that way?

Sister Mary Margaret cleared her throat.

Temperance my good man is a virtue.

Sister St Marie pointed to a nearby shelf.

    There is fine.

    Brendan set the flats down.

I have no desire to be a Cardinal Sister. I'm happy being a man.

Yes, well, Sister Mary Margaret’s gaze was uncertain how to categorise him. A little moderation goes a long way.

Again with the same cardinal virtue? Brendan toyed. Sister, surely you learned more in catechism that that?

Generous as always? Sister St Marie held up a tin can.

That's Carey. I'm merely the messenger. Brendan not wanting to take any credit. Sister St Marie didn’t believe him.

Modest? She quipped back to Mary Margaret.

What of chastity? Sister Mary Margaret continued their debate. Surely she could teach him a thing or two.

But Brendan was well-read in Greek. Philosophy. The birthplace of—

Are you speaking of courtly love, romantic love or

Abstinence. Sister Mary Margaret said firm.

According to one's status in life, Sister? Sister St Marie corrected Sister Mary Margaret.

By all accounts, I should be engaged, that is if Harlan would ever ask me. Brendan was fearless.

Mary Margaret looked down upon it all.

He has not taken the oath of celibacy. Sister St Marie offered her troubled contemporary.

I'm in my prime like Miss Jean Brodie, Brendan smirked.

Chastity is more than just cleanliness and hygiene. Sister St Marie mentioned to Mary Margaret. To be honest with oneself, one's family, one's friends, and to all of humanity.

No doubt Sister St Marie and Brendan had read from the same philosopher.
