    There Is No Shangri-La

    If I was ever going to write a journal. These are the words I would write to introduce you to me. However, such things are foolish, so for now, forever, there will be no dangerous words to be recorded and used against me. My thoughts will remain my own. Pure and random. Turning inside my head. Safe at least for the moment. Best never be spoken. This is what I was taught. This is how I was trained. This is the world in which I live. I am thinking of a friend. He once told me we were living half-lives. You could feel it in our bones and broken teeth. Settling deep within the marrow. What of our hearts? Strontium 90 has a half-life of 28.8 years. And I remember thinking how odd? Twenty- nine years was almost my age.

    First with a blink the ESYS logo. A second blink with a whirl you heard and a wisp of ozone seen the static charge built then released like lightning. In brief seconds the eye waking up. Bright & shiny. It took a moment to adjust. Hayes' apartment was dark. Sparse. But still, he could be seen. A few up clicks of the eye's exposure. There. Hayes possessed a smaller, but athletic build, rugged good looks, working out in 2(x)ist underwear. Boxer briefs. Fit right. Doing his morning stomach crunches on the floor.

    A big eye attempted to focus in on the darkness. In on the movement. Watching the sweat on Hayes' body. Crosshairs and LED indicators. Indicated something. Private eyes were not allowed here in this residence. Unlike the rest of the world. Where you could log on anywhere and see just about anything. Hayes belonged to a club. He was HD: Homeland Defense. That's what it said on the LED. Hayes could only be watched by his own. That's what it meant. HD looked at or looked out for, depending on your philosophy, HD, while HD spied on the civilian population of course. It was expected.

    Only MI: Ministry of Information watched over everyone including HD. They, after all, were the fact finders. The spin doctors. The propaganda artists. Depending on your philosophy. Nice and neat. That's how control was maintained. It was required. These were the new checks and balances.
