    Chapter 11

    The French southern colonial at the end of the street in morning.

    Alfonse pouring out kibble to feed the dogs. Mimi recognising the sound came scampering immediately took to eating from Albert's dish.

    Albert came along and directly eats Mimi.

    Alfonse proximately begins screaming.

    French southern colonial lost in the evening light. Its Anseman Oak swaying in the approach of a summer storm. Through a second-story window past the lace a petulant gust into the drawing-room. Goodheart, Block, Tierce and McManus playing cards as the crystal chandelier dimmed to a flicker.

    The players groaned.

    You better baton down the hatches princess. It looks like hurricane weather. Goodheart grimaced. Yet the game continued.

    Alfonse pulling the fine fabric back. Pushing the stubborn window to the second floor down with a thud. Securing the copper latch as the wind whipped in a fury and the rain began to splatter against the glass.

    Alfonse was the first to notice. Headlights on the walls. Someone approaching up their driveway.

    Goodheart laughing. Sipping on another Brandy Alexander. Like any other night. But he too took notice of the headlights off the ceiling above him. Shadows and light as the sky grew dark. Swallowed in the storm. He couldn't help but smile.

    Alfonse moved down the main stairs quick. Looked out from the nearest kitchen window. A black and white. A police car approaching and he instantly knew.

    Its wet white-walled tires coming to a halt. Headlights piercing the rain. The back door of the squad car opened and with the aid of two State Troopers, they helped his broken body, dragging those long legs of his, back, toward the house.

    Followed knocking on the side door. Service entrance.

    Alfonse opening. Trying to protect himself from the wind and violent rain.

    Mister Goodheart? the Trooper called out in slicker already drenched. Alfonse looked blank.
