The Innkeepers

Herc was placing mashed potatoes on his plate. Passing them along to Frankie who just kept piling them on.

Hayes hungry. Waiting patiently. For his turn. Finally.

Potatoes? You got potatoes? Vegetable gold. A rare find. Hayes was impressed. Mouth salivating. Subconscious images from a Merry Christmas past. Dinner from a childhood long since dead. One of few memories that remained. Regressed. Latent. If you're going to come out of a blackout this was obviously the place to be. And it just started from there.

You gotta try the Yorkshire pudding. It's the bomb. Frankie boasted.

Yes I know I've had it before. Herc clued Frankie in.


Frankie's smile dipped.


When did you have Yorkshire pudding homes?

Where are we in England? Hayes wondered. Had he been out that long?


In a manner of speaking, Herc answered. After all the Innkeeper was Welsh.


I didn't realise I was out that long. Now Hayes wondered aloud. Trying to make a joke of it.


Herc was unimpressed. Yes, you were. I imagine you don't remember much of anything?


When? Frankie asked. Still lost on the fact that Herc had indeed been to

Yorkshire.


You're not the only one he makes it for you know? Herc broke the news.

Frankie looking like he thought he was.

How long you been having blackouts? Herc wanted to know. Sounding more like a doctor than a swimmer.

I can't remember. Hayes was still trying to be funny.
