THE STORY SO FAR: When Carrie inherits her Auntie Jean’s house on a far-flung Hebridean island, she plans to sell it right away. After all, her life is in London. However, when she arrives to sort out its contents, she remembers how much she loved the island as a little girl. Soon, befriended by neighbour Helen, she starts to feel like her old self – before her husband Paul left her heartbroken. Carrie can’t understand why Jean left her Plover House, whereas her older sister Sarah received a cash settlement. However, she does know she can’t rush back to London as planned. Instead, she will stay on the island for the spring and summer while her heart heals. All she has to do is break the news to her boss…

In the week she’d been on the island, Carrie had become used to being uncontactable. She had relished the fact that there was barely any mobile signal, apart from at a tiny spot on the beach – and that her late Auntie Jean’s landline had been disconnected.

Here, Carrie felt free to do – or be – whatever she wanted. At least, that was the fantasy she carried in her mind as she strolled with Helen along the silvery beach. The reality wasn’t quite so idyllic. Before she could fully relax into her extended stay, she had to call her boss.
