THE STORY SO FAR: Carrie planned to sell the house on the Hebridean island that she’d inherited from her Auntie Jean. However, when she travelled up from London to sort out its contents, all the pain in her heart seemed to ebb away. Back home, she’d still been reeling after her husband Paul had left her with no real explanation. Their divorce has just come through, and now she has decided to start a new life on the windswept island – with a plan to open up her house to guests. Her new, undeniably attractive friend Joe was certainly encouraging – but then, he was just the local man who knew everyone, and was probably just being helpful. Now, to upend her plans, her ex, Paul, has appeared on her doorstep.

It was their daughter who’d told Paul about Carrie’s sudden move to the Hebridean island. Not that Carrie blamed Lauren. It was no secret, after all.

‘I had to come right away,’ Paul said now, perching on a chair at the kitchen table.

‘You could’ve let me know!’ Carrie exclaimed.

‘How could I? You’re uncontactable here.’ That much was true – at least, as far as Paul was aware. Carrie decided not to let him know she had a working landline now. She despised him for what he’d done to her – leaving so suddenly with no real explanation other than that he didn’t love her ‘in that way’ any more.
