Chapter 4

Couples were dancing in the ballroom. The orchestra was now playing ‘The Tennessee Waltz’. Tables and chairs remained empty mostly. The dance floor was full.

Daisy and Sumner dancing. Sumner laughing. Waykins and his wife. Bayard and Charlotte.

Haley stood off by himself, swaying to the music. Enjoying himself.

Genleem watched him. Passing by a second time.

The cat and mouse game began.


I say, they do know how to put on the show, Haley admired.


What, no dancing tonight? Genleem questioned.


I'm afraid that would require a partner. Haley smiled.


Yes, all the pretty ladies seem to be taken, Genleem added.


It appears so, finished Haley.


Just left us the old, rich ones I'm afraid.


Haley laughed politely. Just as well. I'm not up for it. Never really my sort of thing.

Foxtrot? Genleem questioned.


Enjoying the music, though. Haley finished his thought.


I know what you mean. I noticed you swaying there. I'm more into the sciences myself, Genleem said, beginning to reveal a small part of himself.


Well, we all can't be Fred Astaire, Haley regretted.


Fred Astaire? Genleem did not know
