Bought By The Twins - Genelia Love

    Prologue: Ian

Nate, wake up. We have to get to Mama’s house.

Nate woke up instantly with a worried look on his face. What’s wrong?

Mom called. Camryn is there. Mom said that she’s looking really bad. Her father’s been at it again.

Nate was up and dressed before I could finish talking.

Camryn was a few years younger than us. She grew up next door to us. Her father was a real bastard. He drank all the time. He wasn’t always violent. Sometimes, he would just drink himself into a stupor and pass out in the chair or on the couch. Unfortunately, more often than not, he was a mean drunk, and became violent with Camryn and her mother.

She hung out at our place all the time when she was little, following me and Nate around everywhere. She felt safer at our house than at her house. Looking back, I thought that her mother may have encouraged her to come over a lot, just to get her out of the way of her father’s anger.

We never minded her being around. At first, we considered her to be our little sister. As we got older, the little sister feelings disappeared and were replaced by something else. However, we never explored what that something else could be.

How long has it been since we’ve seen her? Nate interrupted my musings.

It’s been too long. I think it’s been about six months.

Although we had stayed friends throughout the years, and even kept in touch through texting and Snapchat, we hadn’t seen each other as much lately. Life just got in the way. We had been so busy building up our construction business, that we didn’t do much outside of work.

Breaking the speed limit a little, Nate and I got to our mother’s house in about half an hour. Normally, she lived forty-five minutes away. Mom pointed to the living room when we walked in.

When we saw Camryn sitting on the couch looking lost, with a blank expression on her bruised and battered face, both of our hearts broke. We sank down on the couch, on either side of her.

I was shocked to see how thin and tired she looked. She seemed to have aged twenty years since I had seen her last, although she was still a very beautiful woman.

Worse than the obvious signs of stress, she had two black eyes and a busted lip. She had the remnants of a bloody nose on her face. I could see bruises forming on her arms where her father’s fingers had held her tightly.

I asked Mom for a wash cloth, and gently cleaned the blood from Camryn’s face. I was shocked at how pale she looked. After the blood was washed from her face, she was deathly white. She was going to waste away and become a hollow ghost of herself if something didn’t change.

    What happened? I asked her.

Dad came home drunk again. He went after Mama. She couldn’t take another beating like the last one he gave her. He beat her up pretty good a couple of weeks ago, when I was at work, so I couldn’t stop him. I was afraid that this time he would kill her. Lately, he’s been more violent than he ever has. Before, it would be a slap or a punch and he would be done. Last week, he knocked Mama down, beat her up and kicked her in the ribs, breaking them. She paused to take a breath. There was no way I was going to let him do that again. So, I blocked him. That made him even angrier.

She said it in a matter-of-fact way. She wasn’t looking for sympathy or anything else. She was simply telling us what happened. Her voice was very monotonous, without emotion. I suspected that she might even be in shock.

    Where is your mom now?

Our mother spoke up. She’s asleep in our guest bedroom. I gave her a couple of sleeping pills and put her to bed. Dale got a couple of good hits in before Camryn stepped in. Camryn is right. She looks so pale and weak, I’m not sure how much more that poor woman can take. She looks like she’s on death’s door right now.

Nate stood up. His hot-headed nature took over as he announced that he was going next door to kill the bastard. His face was bright red and his fists were clenched. There was a huge fire in his eyes, and I knew that if he did get next door, he probably would end up killing Dale, Camryn’s father.

Camryn spoke up, again talking in a monotone. He’s in jail. While he was busy with me, Mom called the police. We’ll press charges, but his lawyer will help him find a way to get out of it, I’m sure.

Why do you stay there? I asked her. You are more than old enough to move out and be on your own. Why do you stay?

For Mama, she answered simply. If I leave, there will be no one to protect her.

Is there any place she could go?

No place where Dad won’t find her. He would force her to come home. She’s tried to leave him before, but each time he finds a way to force her to come home. At first, he could sweet talk her and tell her that he was sorry and it would never happen again. Then, I think he threatened to hurt me.

She paused for a minute. Besides, Dad has done a real good job at alienating Mom from all of her friends and relatives. Part of it is because they are just as afraid of him as we are, and they have their own families to protect. Who could blame them?

Camryn’s flat tone of voice made it sound as though she were reading from a very boring book. Her eyes were starting to get a glassy look. Her body began shivering.

I sat, thinking about what she said. There had to be a way out for her and her mother, Callie. Callie was a sweet woman, but had become afraid of her own shadow after years of abuse. I was beginning to get angry and agree with Nate. Unfortunately, it would not solve anything.

Camryn’s shivering got worse, and Mom handed her a cup of hot cocoa. I pulled a blanket from the back of the couch and wrapped it around her.

I’m sorry to bother you guys. I just didn’t know where else to go. We didn’t want to stay at the house tonight in case they just turned Dad loose and he came back home. That’s happened before. We didn’t want to go to a hotel, because he might be able to find us. You guys are the first safe place I thought of.

My mother planted herself firmly in front of Camryn. She gently put two fingers under her chin to have Camryn look up at her. Don’t you ever apologize for that. You did the right thing. We love you, and we wish you would have come to us sooner. We can help you find a way to be free of that monster.

Camryn smiled at Mom. I gently wiped the tears from Camryn’s face.

Mom, Nate and I will find some way to help you and your mom. We promise. Right now, you should get some sleep. You are safe, I told Camryn. I looked over at Mom, who had settled in a chair across from us. I think she should probably go to the hospital.

I told her that both she and her mother should go. However, both of those stubborn women refused. I thought that it would cause more harm to argue with them, so I put Callie to bed and called you guys.

We’re okay, Camryn insisted. Mom had her ribs looked at last week and the doctor taped them up. He asked what happened, but Mom told him she tripped over the dog and fell on her side on the stairs.

You don’t have a dog, Nate snapped.

Camryn looked at him, understanding his anger and frustration. The doctor doesn’t know that, although I know that he suspected something was going on. A policewoman came by the house a day later, but Dad was there, so Mom couldn’t say much. She wouldn’t have anyway.

You are safe tonight, and Mom, Nate and I will find a way to keep you safe from now on. I just wish I had known sooner that things had become so bad. All of us do.

Mom and Nate nodded in agreement with my words.

Camryn smiled and snuggled in closer to me. I leaned over to kiss her on the top of her head. She looked up at the same time. Our lips connected. Once my lips met hers, I felt like a magnet was holding them and it was almost impossible to break away from the kiss. The kiss was very tender, because I didn’t want to hurt her lips any more than they were already.

When the kiss did finally end, she looked into my eyes, and shyly smiled. Wow, was all she said.

Her face had a small glow to it, and her eyes were a little bit brighter. She put her fingers up to her lips and sighed. I liked that, she said simply.

Then, she snuggled even tighter against me. I wrapped my arms around her. She almost instantly fell asleep.

I marveled at the feelings that had run through my body during the kiss. The heat and lightning that formed the moments our lips met still lingered, warming up my entire body. I had kissed a lot of women, but none of them had ever created those kinds of feelings in me.

I looked up at Nate. He grinned and raised his eyebrows. Mom looked at me with a knowing smirk on her face.

    Really, brother?

I didn’t do it on purpose. But I’m pretty sure that I’d like to do it again.

He sat down next to us on the couch. I think it’s been too long since we’ve seen her. The last time I remember seeing her, she was a little girl. Now, she’s a grown up beautiful woman.

    That she is, I answered.

You know, I’ve always loved her. I had a crush on her since she became a teenager. She is so smart and sweet.

I hear you, little brother, I replied.

Nate directed the conversation back to the problem at hand. What are we going to do? We can’t let her go back to that monster.

True, I stated. But there is no way in the world that she is going to leave her mother behind.

So, part one of any plan we might have has to be finding a safe place for Callie. Some place where Dale can’t find her.

Mom said that she might be able to help find a safe place for Callie.

I have an aunt who lives in a little town in Kansas. She has a big house and lives alone, except for a whole bunch of dogs. I know that she would be glad to have some company.

Tell her that Nate and I would be glad to pay for room and board for Callie until she can get back on her feet.

That shouldn’t take long, since Callie is a high school math teacher, certified to teach grades six through twelve. There’s a nationwide shortage of teachers, so Callie should be able to get a position pretty quickly. We’ll just pay the fine for her breaking her contract without giving thirty days, if the school district asks for one. Chances are, they’ll be understanding.

Mom made the phone call to her Aunt Peggy and explained the situation. Aunt Peggy remembered Callie and Camryn from when she visited us. She said that she would be glad for the company and wouldn’t hear of taking any money for room and board. She also mentioned that she had dogs and a good security system, so there was no way in the world that Dale would ever get to her.

She is such a sweet woman. I hate that she has gone through so much, Aunt Peggy told Mom.

I’ll call an officer to go over with us tomorrow so she can pack a couple of suitcases. She’ll be on an afternoon plane. Kansas is far enough away that Dale will never find her. He wouldn’t think of looking for her there, because as far as he knows, she doesn’t know anyone there.

With that settled, we had to find a way to help Camryn. She was in her senior year of college at the university, and only a couple months away from earning her Master’s degree in psychology. There was no way she would want to leave the city. I said as much to Mom and Nate.

Is there any way to keep her safe if she’s in the same vicinity as her father? He’s as intelligent as he is vicious, and he would find a way to get to her, Mom asked.

I looked down at the angel sleeping in my arms. I brushed a small lock of hair out of her eyes. We’ll find a way to help you. I promise.

I leaned down to kiss her forehead. She sighed, and I ran my fingers through her silky brown hair that fanned across my chest. Once again, a flame of desire coursed through my body.

    Nate

After we were sure that Camryn was asleep, the three of us discussed how we were going to be able to help Camryn. It would have to be today, because once he found out Callie was gone, there was no way he would let Camryn out of his sight. He needed someone to terrorize. Dale might actually end up killing his daughter.

There was also the problem that if Callie thought her daughter was in danger she would come straight back here. Then, they both would likely end up hurt – or worse.

Talking to him won’t help. He would tell us to mind our own business, Ian said. Then, Camryn would be a bigger target. Asking him to let her go live with Mom or us won’t help either, because he would simply refuse. Never mind that Camryn is old enough to just go, he wouldn’t let her. He would find a way to trap her.

Mom added. I think that Camryn is so afraid that he would come after her, she won’t leave. Often times the abuse gets even worse when the victims leave.

I could feel my blood boiling. Rage rolled through me like a tornado. Clenching my fists, I snarled, I want to go kill him. They’ll never find his body.

Ian knew I meant exactly what I said, responding, I’m angry too. But hurting Dale is not the answer. It won’t help. Violence never solves anything. Besides, Camryn needs you here and level-headed. You can’t help her if you’re in prison.

Gritting my teeth and growling in the back of my throat, I knew Ian was right, that violence doesn’t solve anything. However, this was the one time that I was having trouble controlling the anger and hatred that consumed me.

I looked over at Camryn, sleeping peacefully in Ian’s arms. "How could a man do this to his wife and daughter? How could any
