My stomach somersaults as I stand in the bathroom, barefoot and chilly, waiting for the white stick to decide my fate. Each little roll threatens to send me to the toilet again, this time with my lunch.

The box claims the test only takes three minutes, but already, it feels like I’ve been waiting a lifetime. A few thoughts war in my mind as I stand there: I can’t be pregnant; I’m overreacting; and there’s no point in putting yourself through this, Mindy, because you already know the answer.

About a week ago, I started feeling sick in the mornings. At the time, I chalked it up to stress about midterms. I busted my ass studying for the psychology and chemistry exams, and last year I worked myself so hard that I ended up with the flu. But when the symptoms continued even after the midterms were over, and my period never showed up, I knew something was wrong.

"God, please, please, please don’t let me be pregnant."

If I am, that means I’ll have to tell him, my ex. Star quarterback of Prescott High School, and popular guy all around. When we were dating, Marshall was like walking in a technicolor world, whereas everything else was black and white. He brought vitality to my life when no one else did. I thought I did the same for him, and we were over the moon for one another.

But there was something off, now that I think back on it. Marshall Wilson happily took my heart, my first kiss, and my virginity, but he couldn’t be bothered to take me on a date in public nor tell me I was beautiful. And to top it off, those last few weeks we were together, I let him convince me it was okay to skip the condom once or twice. Stupid me.

Now, although it’s only been a month since we broke up, he’s already moved on to someone thin, blonde, and beautiful. Her name is Elise Taylor. She’s a varsity cheerleader, and my secret nemesis. Her lips are so full and pink that everyone says she’s getting filler. But I don’t think it’s her lips that are the problem: it’s her personality because as much as I want to hate her, I can’t. Honestly, Elise is kind, smart, and funny. And I have a feeling that she had no idea that Marshall and I were even dating. After all, he never acknowledged me on social media, nor did we go to any public places. So how would anyone know?

But now I’m left with the consequences. How could I have been such an idiot? How could I have trusted him?

I close my eyes and hug myself tight. Alone in the house, and alone in this tiny bathroom, all I want to do is cry. I’m single now, and it’s almost spring break. I should be hanging out with my best friend Pepper, not worried about a life growing in my belly.

I shake my head hard enough that my ponytail slaps me in the face. None of this matters, anyway. I’m not pregnant. I can’t be pregnant. If I believe that—if I honestly believe that—everything will be fine, right?

I open my eyes, and my legs turn to jelly. I fall to my knees, rattling the toiletries in the medicine cabinet loud enough to wake the dead. Then, my hand reaches for the indicator, and my eyes fill with tears. Two pink lines appeared on the stick, one a lighter shade than the other. The test is positive. I’m pregnant.
