Under the swinging Boar’s Head sign the villagers were an angry mob. They kicked and beat him. His clothing was torn from his shoulders as he was dragged through the mud.

In the early light, Renard stepped out of the département’s petit poste de police as the villagers approached, the face of Chaff thrown up before him.

Renard smoking casually a cigarette. Holding it as if he was a gentleman.
