His blue-grey eyes were menacing and hard.
It was one of those days. There had been a power cut the night before, so Helen’s radio alarm hadn’t gone off. As she ran across the station car park, splattering herself in puddles, she could hear the train coming. Would she make it? She bounded up the stairs and onto the platform, the train was still there… she threw herself through the doors just before they shut. Phew!
Flopping down into a seat, panting and dishevelled, Helen could feel everyone looking at her. But she didn’t care. She just closed her eyes and tried to get her breath back.
When she opened them again, and looked around, she realised her mistake. She’d got onto her usual carriage and thrown herself into the same old seat.
Oh no! She hadn’t even had a chance to yank a comb through her dishevelled hair and apply some make-up before leaving home. She hadn’t intended he would see her like this.
She looked seen her ungainly entrance and, being the gentleman he was, decided to pretend he hadn’t noticed. That would be it.
