Over the course of two interviews with the 62-year-old French actor Vincent Lindon – one on Zoom and one in person – I have gone from admiring his work to adoring his presence. On screen he embodies masculine gruffness, albeit with tenderness inside, and seems as if he could be a serious man to interview, perhaps inclined to curt answers. In reality he has a great deal to say, and extra lights come on and extra warmth emerges when he sees that you are engaged. The more you are turned on, the more he turns it up, creating a charismatic tension that explains why he is France’s answer to Tom Cruise.
