tanding on the beach, I look one way and then the other, ensuring no one is watching before stripping down to my bikini. I don’t need someone warning me about the dangers of swimming at night or contacting a rescue crew to pull me out. Sticking my clothes in the oilskin bag that was a present from the King himself, I dive deep into the water, letting it flow past me as I dive deep toward the ocean floor. There are distinct advantages to being a Vampire and two of them are: not feeling cold and not having to breathe—excellent qualities in an assassin for an underwater King.
Like most vampires, I have more money and treasures than I know what to do with. When I was turned, I was an elite assassin. The position with the King is perfect for me. I get to take the jobs I like, pass on those I don’t and still have time to read and write books. Two hobbies I developed to keep myself from going insane with boredom.
The sea-life stream pass me, making a path through the water. Even the big predators of the sea, sharks and giant squids seem to sense my otherness and leave me be. They recognize another apex predator and one that isn’t quite right. They shy away from me, leaving the water calm and peaceful as I cut through it. Mermaid City comes into view after a few hours of swimming. I might not be alive anymore, animated by some dark magic, but I get tired. It takes extra effort, but it happens. By the time I touch down at the base of the castle, I am glad for the rest.
The gates open, and I stand in the antechamber waiting for the waters to recede before slipping through a door to redress. Most people wouldn’t wear tight leather pants, knee-high boots, and a red corset to meet the King, but we are far passed the usual palace niceties, and neither of us pretends to be something we are not. I push open the large double doors into what I call the throne room; I think they refer to it as the audience chamber. My boots are loud on the stone steps as I walk to the center of the room and nod to the man on the dais.
The King is an opposing man with blue eyes, the build of a warrior, and the demeanor of one used to being followed. Isla, my sincere and unwavering gratitude for your role in helping Calypso be freed.
It was my pleasure, but I am not sure that we have heard the last of those men. From the snatches of conversation Calypso overheard, there may be more of your kind and others trapped within these men’s homes.
The King nods, Yes, I have had a full report from Titus and Calypso, and I fear you may be right. We can’t allow these men to hold other species hostage in this manner. They need to be stopped before they are exposed, and it throws the world into chaos.
