About this ebook

The last thing that paranormal romance writer Lacy expected when she went out for a normal, everyday jog, was to be bitten by a horse-sized wolf.

The last thing that the alpha of the Winterbourne pack expected when he tried to approach the woman he bit was to be immediately tased and pepper-sprayed.

And imagine Lacy's surprise when she learned the presumed stalker at her front door who she had just tased was not in fact a stalker, but the wolf who had bitten her.

Said surprise would only deepen when the man would go on to to tell her that she's now a part of his clan, and that she's now his responsibility.

Oh yeah, and did he mention that werewolves are real?

As the alpha of the pack and the one who turned Lacy, Marcus takes her under his wing.

However, with only two weeks to teach her their ways before the next full moon, he finds her to be more than he ever bargained for, and soon the two are testing each other's limits and clawing their way into each other's hearts.

Marcus discovers that he may have found his mate in the girl, though things are not all peaches and cream.

Trouble looms on the horizon of Lacy's new life. Marcus is being challenged for his spot as alpha by Jameson, a fellow werewolf whose motives are unclear, but who makes Marcus's hackles raise with suspicion.

And to make matters worse, Lacy realizes that she is not the only one in her life who is harboring secrets.

As she begins to uncover the mysteries around her, she learns something about her dearest friend that will change everything.

    Shiftly Speaking - E.L. Jones

    Chapter One

    *

    Lacy

    I

hate running. It is the bane of my existence. But sitting in a chair writing for hours on end, makes donuts stick to a girl’s ass. I look behind me, suddenly spooked, and roll my eyes.  Listening to the latest Ted Bundy biography probably wasn't the smartest idea. Especially as the narrator gets to the part about Ted hiking in the same area of Idaho I am

in and abducting a girl! I can't help it; I am a real crime addict. A ‘murderino’ as my favorite true-crime podcast has dubbed their fans. Maybe this is the reason I attract weirdos and flakes.

My parents have the perfect marriage, my brother puts his wife on a pedestal, and they are some of the happiest people I know. It feels as if I’m always the odd one out. I just want a nice guy to settle down with that will put up with my quirks, stimulate my brain, and blow my mind in the bedroom. Is that too much to ask? According to my dating life? yes, yes it is.

I bought this cabin in the woods of Idaho because I needed a change after my books blew up, and I was dubbed the snarkier, sexier version of Stephanie Meyer. Our books both have vampires and shifters, but my vampires don’t sparkle, they seduce, and my shifters are way more alpha male than in touch with their feelings.

I had been tired of the hustle and bustle of the city and wanted a change of scenery. I had just ended another dead-end relationship and was feeling down. Scrolling through Zillow was one of my favorite things to do. I love looking at houses. I happened upon this cabin on the lake. It had a feeling of seclusion, while only being a short distance from a cute little town with all the amenities I felt necessary to survive – like take out and Amazon delivery.

I have a one-click problem. It’s a good thing I made millions on my books and movies! Amazon needs to stop sending me those curated emails. Maybe I can even find the mountain version of speed dating and find myself a cute lumberjack.

We will fall head over heels for each other, and he will be secretly well-read and intellectual, as well as ripped. We will have two kids and a dog and live in this cabin forever.

I laugh out loud at myself and how my imagination runs away with me.

It is beautiful here. Although I am one of those girls that would instead look at nature through the big picture windows of my new cabin, rather than interact with it, I have to admit running through the woods actually makes exercise more enjoyable.

The last year of my life has been a whirlwind. I went from being a successful pharmaceutical rep who wrote books about shifters and things that go bump in the night for fun, to a full-time author with a seven-figure book deal, and a contract for movie deals for my first three books! My author's career was actually a combination of good timing and dumb luck. I had set up a dinner to woo a new client, a doctor, and had been listening to another doctor drone on. It was incredible how a little free scotch and undivided attention was all it took to get them to buy a new drug for arthritis, or whatever I had been peddling at that moment. Nodding at another one of his golf stories, I had let my mind wander, and the idea had struck me like a lightning bolt.

That very night I went home, booted up my computer, and the first pages of The Alpha's Perfect Mate had flown from my fingertips onto the page. I had written the rest of the first book in a feverish weekend that I don’t quite remember, fueled by wine and takeout. I came out of my writing coma surrounded by Chinese takeout containers, pizza boxes, and empty wine bottles. After some polishing and much-needed editing, I sent it to a couple of agents I found online and forgot about it. I went back to my regular job of peddling drugs, to bored, attention-starved doctors.

The book had struck a chord with three publishers who got into a bidding
