Chapter 1 – What is the Atkins Diet

With all the diet regimes out there, it can be quite overwhelming choosing the right one that will work for you. If you have been trying out different kinds of diet systems like Alkaline, Vegan or Gluten Free, then you may have seen how different some of their approaches are.

The diet programs mentioned above all have one thing in common – you have to drastically lower the amount of calories you eat if you want to adapt the system into your life. Most of the diet programs around also require you to eat less foods that are rich in fat.

Ever since Dr. Robert Atkins founded the dietary method in the early ‘70s, the Atkins Diet has remained popular because of how it breaks away from conventional methods that most other diets follow.

    How It Gained Popularity

The Atkins Diet first came out in 1972 when the late Dr. Atkins, who was once overweight, published a series of books inspired by his own efforts to resolve his weight problems, called Dr. Atkins’ Diet Revolution. He used a research paper that was published in 1958 and entitled Weight Reduction that he found from The Journal of the American Medical Association as his primary resource material for coming up with a dietary practice that will support him lose weight. After its success, he published another book 30 years later, Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution, in which he had introduced some additions without altering the original core concepts of the first book.

After having shown how successful the diet was on his own overweight condition, Dr. Atkins’ dietary program quickly gained a big following in the USA, particularly in 2003 and 2004, during which as much as around one in eleven Americans was using it. It was during this time that the American market experienced a huge decline in the sales of food products that are discouraged by the Atkins Diet, which was even being blamed for a sudden drop in sales of the famous American donut company, Krispy Kreme. Plenty of companies had started to capitalize on the then-becoming famous low-carb craze that was attributed to The Atkins’ Diet’s success.

Now, decades after it had first been introduced to the public, and even years after Dr. Atkins’ unfortunate accident that led to a fatal head injury in 2003, the Atkins Diet still remains to be one of the most well-known and trusted dietary programs in and out of the USA.

Nature of the Diet and the Science Behind It

    ––––––––

Dr. Robert Atkins released his first book, Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution in 1972, announcing a new way when it comes to dieting. It dramatically contradicted most, if not all, of the mainstream diets during that time which recommended a reduced eating of foods rich in carbohydrates and fat. The diet created by Dr. Atkins only requires limiting the consumption of carbohydrates. It basically allows moderate to liberal consumption of protein and fat-rich foods.

    What are carbohydrates?

There are basically two types of carbohydrates, the simple carbohydrates and the complex carbohydrates. Carbohydrate-rich foods come in many forms like breads, rice, crackers and root crops like potatoes. Carbohydrates are the body’s main source of fuel. A simple analogy will be if your body is a car, carbohydrate is the gasoline. How fast carbohydrates are absorbed by the body is dependent on the type.

Glucose, also called dextrose or blood sugar, is the simplest form of carbohydrate. Glucose flows in your bloodstream, making it always available
