Chapter 1 – An Overview on Ketogenic Diet
The Ketogenic diet, regarded by its advocates as one of the most profound health boosting lifestyle changes for effortless weight loss, has been used for a number of different purposes since it was first discovered. The diet has become popular among Western society, for its ability to produce dramatic results, not only in regards to weight loss but other lifestyle factors as well.
The Ketogenic Diet is basically a low-carb diet wherein carbohydrate consumption is drastically reduced and is often used for the treatment of diabetes and obesity. This eating pattern recommends that foods that contain easily digestible or simple carbohydrates (e.g. sugar, white bread, white pasta) be limited or substituted with foods that contain a high percentage of protein and fats. Examples are meat, fish, poultry, eggs, nuts, cheese, and seeds. Most vegetables are also allowed while fruits are limited because of their high sugar content.
The aim of the diet that eliminates carbohydrates almost completely is to induce a metabolic state within the body known as ketosis. It is in the state where the dramatic body composition changes occur.
The Ketogenic Diet was designed by Dr. Russel Wilder in 1924 at the Mayo Clinic for the treatment of epilepsy in children. Although it was highly effective, its fame slowly diminished because of the release of new medications for seizure in the 1940s.
The Charlie Foundation, which was founded in 1994 by the family of Charlie Abraham, picked up the principle behind the Ketogenic Diet. Charlie used to have daily seizures even after trying all known anti-seizure medications. A brain surgery also didn’t help his condition so his family turned to the decades old Ketogenic Diet. Charlie started on the Ketogenic Diet when he was still a toddler and adapted the eating pattern for 5 years. He is now in college and has remained seizure free since then. The foundation is actively promoting the Ketogenic Diet both as treatment for epilepsy and other brain disorders, and as a healthy diet system that can be adapted by all people into their lifestyles.
The Ketogenic Diet, being a low-carb diet system, restricts carbohydrate consumption to less than 20 percent of the daily caloric intake. Because of the low carbohydrate amount in this diet program, it can also be used to prevent or treat chronic medical problems like cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes.
Ketogenic Diet experts advocate argue that this diet, like the Paleolithic diet, is closer to the diet of humans 15 thousand years ago, before the dawn of agriculture. They say that humans are adapted genetically to diets that are low in carbohydrates because food rich in it were scarce during those ancient times.
There are archeological evidences supporting this theory and proves that humans survived and subsisted by gathering and hunting. We have slowly evolved from the vegetarian diets of the great apes to one with a higher level of meat eating. Relatives of the homo sapiens, which is our species, like the Neanderthals seem to be exclusively carnivorous.
Americans, generally, eat a lot of carbohydrates. It’s even recommended by the USDA Food Pyramid, with the carbohydrate rich foods in the bottom of the pyramid meaning the bulk of what we eat should be made of carbohydrates. These are foods that contain simple carbohydrates like white bread, pasta, and rice.
