    Chapter 1

    Itried to explain.

No, no, this is all wrong. That’s not mine. I don’t know what that is.

But my protests rang hollow, even in my ears.

The policeman looked at me. I looked around, looking for help of some sort, help from anywhere, anyone.

I saw Lucy and Michael, standing at a distance, just watching.

Them, I said, it was them.

But how could I explain it?

The police officer opened the baggie. He sniffed, gingerly, at the powder.

OK, he said, We’d better test this.

The other police officer came over to me.

Ma’am? he said, If you’ll just come with us please.

I was helpless. I walked over to their car with them. The officer carrying the baggie went around to the trunk of the car.

Wait here, please, the other one said. I assumed that they were testing the drugs to confirm what they were. The officer who was with me was still being polite enough, but there was a cold tone to his voice. He was all business now.

Shortly, the first officer came back. He dabbed his finger in the powder, delicately, and brought it out. He looked at it closely, frowning. Then he tasted it, quickly. This was the kind of thing you saw in movies, but I’d never thought that I’d see it up close like this. I had always been aware that it was just something they did for the sake of making scenes look more dramatic. It was too dangerous to do with unknown substances in real life, surely?

Suddenly, the serious look on his face dissolved into a grin.

Planning on doing some baking were we? he asked.

    What do you mean?

Baking soda. It’s just baking soda. Seems as though someone was playing a pretty nasty joke on you though and wasting police time as well. Do you have any idea who it might be? The other officer, who had been looking so serious, also started to grin.

Oh, I had some ideas all right. I had some pretty good ideas. I looked over at Lucy and Michael. Michael had his hands on his hips. Even from this distance he could no doubt spot the difference in body language and see that things were not going quite as they had imagined. Had they thought I would be handcuffed and tossed into the back of the car? Had they imagined that this would be my final, ultimate humiliation and that I would be gone, defeated and disgraced?

It was absurd. Surely, they realized that the powder they had planted on me would be tested. They can’t have thought that they would get away with this. But maybe they had just wanted to scare me. And word would certainly have spread quickly about me being taken away in handcuffs. Rumors would spread about me, once again.

But it hadn’t worked, and that was the important thing. I felt like pointing at them and shouting, Them! It was them, officer! Fantasies arose in my mind of the tables being turned and seeing them get dragged away in cuffs themselves.

But what was the point? There was no way I could prove it. They would get away with it again; I was sure that they would. They must have covered their tracks. It was hopeless. They’d protest their innocence, and I’d look paranoid. Maybe they’d even threaten legal action against me! I wouldn’t give them the satisfaction. I had to act as though I was above it all. I couldn’t lower myself to their level.

No, officers, I said, No idea. Sorry.

The officer who had found the baggie looked at me intently.

    Are you sure?

I’m sure. Sorry. I’ll keep thinking about it, but nothing springs to mind.

OK. Well, let us know if you do think of anything. This is a serious matter, you know. It might seem like a bit of a joke, but it could have turned very unpleasant for you - not to mention the fact that we could be getting on with real police work. And I’m sure you have real work that you could be doing as well.

Of course. I’ll let you know.

I took their contact details and said goodbye to them. I was angry as I headed back into the hospital. Michael and Lucy seemed to have made themselves scarce, which was probably for the best for all of us. I didn’t know what I might have done in my current mood.

    I went to see Patricia.

    Is everything OK? she asked.

Yes. It was all some kind of a misunderstanding.

OK. I won’t pry too much then. As long as it’s all sorted.

Yes. I’d rather just get back to work now, to be honest.

Of course, I understand. We had to send someone else in to help Dr. Mueller though, of course, so there isn’t really anything else for you to be doing this afternoon. Looks like you get to finish early for the day.

I felt angry tears of frustration in my eyes. All I wanted was to work and do the best damned job I possibly could. Why couldn’t they just let me do that in peace? Why did I have to put up with all of this?

    "Isn’t there anything
