    Chapter 1

Igroaned inwardly hearing Patricia. What now? What do I have to put up with this time? Why can’t life just be simple? Well, not simple exactly, but certainly not the way it was at that moment, with drama after drama.

Maybe I was wrong, I told myself. Maybe everything was OK. But I knew I was fooling myself. Really, there was no mistaking the tone of Patricia’s voice. Something was up and I had no idea what it could be. Nevertheless, I had a pretty good idea who would be behind it. It just never seemed to end.

So once again I found myself following Patricia to her office, taking a seat as she shut the door behind us, and waiting for her to begin.

We’ve not spoken much recently, have we Bailey? she began.

No, I guess not. I mean, everything has been going pretty well, so I didn’t really feel as though I had too much cause to. I haven’t had any issues. Not that I only speak to you when things are going wrong, but...you know what I mean. That’s been the way things have been more often than not recently. And I was away at the conference for a few days.

I felt as though I was rambling. I told myself to shut up so that Patricia could get to the point a whole lot sooner and just put me out of my misery.

Well, yes, she continued, It’s actually the conference that I wanted to talk to you about.

Go on, I said, thinking to myself surely, she can’t know about Chris, can she? But no, of course she couldn’t. Unless Susan, or someone else, had been following me around all night then it wasn’t possible. A paranoid thought flashed through my mind then. What about Dr. Russell? Could he have been following me? Worse, could he have orchestrated the whole thing? Was Chris some kind of old med school friend of his who he had roped in to set me up somehow? But then, if that was the case, then what could the endgame possibly be? Woman out of town hooks up with man was hardly much of a scandal, was it? But I had other wild thoughts. Had he filmed it? Was that part of the setup?

But it had nothing to do with Chris, as it turned out.

Bailey, I know how these things can be, these conferences. I’ve been to my fair share. I’ve seen it all. And yes, I remember what it’s like to be young and away from home at something like this. It can feel like one big party. It’s probably the closest our profession gets to the tradition of the drunken office party, except on an even grander scale. So, with that in mind, I don’t want you to feel as though there is any kind of judgment from me, or anything like that. OK?

Patricia, I think you’d better just get to the point, I said, feeling an increasing sense of foreboding.

There has been some talk. I can’t pretend that I haven’t heard it. And I just wanted to talk to you, see if you are OK, and try to get to the bottom of what has been going on.

I sighed. Here we go again, I thought.

What talk? Go on, let’s get it over with.

People around the hospital have been saying that you and Dr. Mueller were...well, that you were sleeping together in Chicago. The latest rumor that I heard was that it might have been going on for some time.

I laughed at that. Patricia looked uncertain for a moment, but then she started to smile. She stopped though, as if she was remembering something else that she had to discuss with me.

But you see, she continued, that’s not all. If that was all it was then maybe I could just dismiss it as idle gossip, the kind of silly rumors you always get working in a bubble like this. But, like I say, there’s more.

Go on then, let me have it.

The latest rumor is that you got a friend of yours to sleep with Dr. Mueller. And not only that, but that you joined in. And that you invited other men to get involved as well.

Oh my God, that’s the most absurd thing I’ve ever heard.

So there really is no truth to the rumors?

Well, I mean, there was this girl, I saw her shocked look and immediately tried to reassure her, "Oh, no, no, no! Not like that! I mean, I guess there is an element of truth in the story. But, I mean, just
