Chapter 1

It’s hard to remember what happened after I got back into my scrubs. Dr. Russell had shouted at me,

Go! Hurry up! and I had run to get ready.

And then I emerged into the maelstrom. It was as though I was on a roller coaster that I couldn’t get off no matter how much I wanted to.

Monica was there, shouting in my face. I stood for a second, dumbfounded, unsure what was being said to me.

Come on, Bailey, they’re almost here!.

I had no idea what was coming. Monica and I pushed our way through the crowds that were rushing in either direction in the corridor. Despite my initial feeling of being surrounded by absolute chaos, as I made my way to the operating room, I started to notice a strange order to it all. The shouting was clipped, to the point. People making demands of what they wanted, needed. Others replying in the affirmative,

Where the fuck is Dr. Lane? "Has anyone seen Johnson, please?" but these cries were always answered in the affirmative.

Everyone was coming together.

This lent me a strange sense of calm and, dare I say it, confidence. I was surrounded by people who had been there, done that. We were all in this together. We would all get through this together.

We got into the operating room, and as the door closed behind us, the worst of the noise subsided. There was Dr. Russell, already prepped and ready for surgery. Behind his mask, all I could see was his eyes. They flashed with a steely fire. This helped to calm me further. Whatever came through this door, whatever it might be, he - we - could handle it. He was the best there was. For all the arrogance, for all the harsh words and unyielding attitude, he was still the man you wanted by your side at moments like this. He was the man you wanted to see, standing there in scrubs, ready, if you were rolled in for emergency surgery.

Get your yourself scrubbed and gowned! he barked at me.
