Chapter 1

Icouldn’t believe what I was hearing. I had genuinely thought the whole situation with Dr. Russell was starting to resolve itself. Sure, he was still a jerk to me during surgery, but I was learning to develop a thick skin. I could kind of zone out and just let it all wash over me.

Outside of surgery, I got along OK with Monica; however, she didn’t dare show me too much friendship when Dr. Russell was around, which I could understand although I did think it was a bit of a shame. Patricia always took an interest in how I was doing, and my friendship with Dr. Clark was really starting to blossom. I felt lucky to get away from Dr. Russell’s clutches, and now all I had to do was put up with his petulant man-child act. He had been showing quite a lot of attention to one of the nurses, so I was hoping that he would just move on and leave me alone.

It was a nice idea, but unfortunately things had taken a turn for the worse.

Here he was leering at me, insinuating that I had to sleep with him if I wanted to keep my job. I couldn’t imagine anything worse, being forced into sex with a man who I had grown to despise. But the life that I had built meant so much to me.

And Josie’s life seemed to really be on track now. If anything happened to disrupt her life and it was in any way my fault, I would absolutely never forgive myself.

Dr. Russell had just walked away after his thinly veiled threat. He had his head held high, looking as though he was quite proud of himself. He should have been absolutely ashamed of the awful things he had said to me, but in his arrogance, he simply thought he had backed me into a corner and I had no idea what I should do.

Walking home, I could feel that I was physically shaking. This was no good. I had to calm myself down. I couldn’t let Josie see me in this state. I sat on a bench just down the road from my apartment and started to think things through.

He had to be bluffing. He simply had to be. This was the real world. No one could get away with that sort of thing—blackmailing me into sex! And besides, why would he do it really? He could have any of the silly young nurses, why would he risk his career and his reputation over me? It was ridiculous.
