    Chapter 1

Ihave always wanted to be a doctor, ever since I was a little child. Whenever school teachers would ask me in elementary school, middle school, and all the way to high school what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always said that I wanted to be a doctor. I studied very hard throughout the course of my life and managed to finally find a profession in the medical field that was a perfect fit. I got to train as a Surgical Technician at the medical school at New York University with doctors, nurses, and other technicians. I felt as though everything was coming together for me. But then again, I guess I could never have predicted what was coming next for me. Life always throws curveballs at you, and I sure had a few coming my way. It’s probably best not to know how much you have to go through before you set out or you might never manage to get started at all. But damn, I sure could have done with a few warning signs along the way.

After I graduated, I started working as a surgical technician, or surg tech as they sometimes call us for short, in a local hospital, and I loved every second of it. I adored waking up every morning, getting ready, grabbing my white surgical coat, and heading out to work. Everything was perfect. I was fortunate enough to be practicing a profession that I treasured, but little did I know that trouble was already on the horizon, heading straight at me. I just couldn’t see it right then. But it could sure see me.

To me, trouble was now synonymous with Dr. Matthew Russell. I never quite liked him, but at the same time, he intrigued me so much. I was not the only one around that disliked him. It seemed like many other fellow surgeons, doctors, and even nurses had jumped on the hate-Dr. Russell-train. It seemed like he was either a very misunderstood person or simply a jerk. It was this kind of fascination that I had for him. I would watch him from afar, trying to figure him out. Was I drawn to him? Looking back now I guess I can see that I was. At the time though I was oblivious to what was really going on.

He had a very mysterious allure, and he never spoke too much to anybody, even his fellow surgeon colleagues. The only person to whom he really spoke was his surgical technician Martha. Contrary to the other surgeons who worked at the hospital, Dr. Russell had come with his own. Other surgeons had assigned to them from the hospital's administration, but for some reason Dr. Russell only worked with Martha whom he had brought with him. She was the only one who did not speak ill of him and who seemed to even like him a little bit. I sometimes wondered if she was the key to unlocking the secrets of Dr. Russell. But when I found myself thinking like that I’d smile and tell myself that I was being silly, obsessed even.

Dr. Russell was a tall man with quite a muscular body. He was different from most of the other fellow doctors and surgeons who were rocking their extra pounds when it came to his body shape and type. Dr. Russell looked like an athlete. It seemed like he worked
