About the Author
image-placeholderChapter 1
Ifell backwards towards the door, trying to get away, but it was too late.
The man in front of me was tall—well over six feet—but thin and wiry. He reached out one of his long arms and grabbed my wrist in his huge, strong hand that was impossible to break away from.
What?
I began to ask, but he pulled me towards him and said in a soft but menacing voice that was deep and emotionless, No.
I tried to pull away but the grip on my wrist tightened further. It was painful now, I felt the bones in my wrist grinding together. I started to cry out and the other hand covered my mouth, covering my nose, smothering me. No,
he repeated with slightly more emphasis.
I stopped struggling, I knew that it was pointless. Whoever he was, he had me.
Are you going to be good? Are you going to stay quiet?
I nodded the best I could with that hand over my face. I had to get his hand away from my mouth and my nose, I was struggling to breathe by this point.
Good girl,
he said, his voice still sounding dead. He slowly, tentatively, removed the hand from my mouth and looked at me with those awful, terrifying eyes.
I wanted to ask who he was, ask what he wanted, but I remembered his question about staying quiet. I remembered the feel of that smothering, cloying hand on my face, the smell of it, awful like a damp cellar, like dead things in the woods.
The woods...this was the man I had seen then. I knew that it was. Despite the fact that it had been dark I was sure I recognized him from the glimpse I had of someone hiding out there. And as I looked at him, I started to become more convinced that he was also the man from the diner as well. I couldn’t be completely sure, but I was pretty sure all the same.
I know you,
he said and his voice sent a chill down my spine. It still sounded dead but there was also a note of neediness, urgency in it. What was he going to do to me now? Thoughts of the strangler, all those sensationalist stories that had been running in the local news, ran through my head. Those hands—those massive hands. Imagine them around my throat, imagine them choking the life out of me.
Still, I didn’t dare to answer him, always remembering the feeling of his hand. The adrenaline was pumping by now. I was shaking. He was still holding my wrist, but not quite as tightly as before. He could feel me shaking, could sense my fear, I was sure of that. His breathing sped up. It sounded ragged. Was he getting excited? My fear grew and grew as I realized that he was building up to something.
I know you,
he repeated, I’ve seen you. Seen you around.
Where?
I said, before I could stop myself. Luckily, however, he didn’t put his hand over my mouth again this time.
I go to clubs sometimes. I hate them. I hate the people. All of you. I see what you all do in those places. It disgusts me. All of you disgust me. I go there to see the people though, the people who need judgment. I am here to judge them, to make them better. I spoke to some of them, once. I tried to make them see. I wanted to save them, once. But they just laughed at me. And so, I had to judge them. They don’t laugh at me anymore. I’ve realized now that there is no point trying to save them. It just wastes time. So, I move straight to judgment. I’m sorry that this has to happen to you, but I have learned that there is no hope of salvation for you...you people.
What? A club? Why me?
I saw you out there. Dancing. Making a fool of yourself, playing the harlot. Usually I follow them home and get them there and then. It’s not always been clubs, mind you. There have been shops, cafes, one I just saw in the park. But wherever it is that I find them, I follow them and I finish it. I was behind you, that night. I saw you approach where you live. I wanted to get you outside, in the shadows. I was going to leave you in a bush. You’d have been found soon enough, don’t worry. But then, as I saw you out there, I came closer and then I saw some other man approach you.
My God. That night with Dr. Russell. He’d been following me that night? That whole night he’d been watching me? I was horrified to realize how close I had come to disaster that night.
"I couldn’t do it when he was there. I try to avoid any altercations like that. Your friend in the forest...that was unfortunate. But that night, when I first followed you, I knew that I could wait. I just had to be patient and my time would come. I turned and left straight away that night. I went home. I knew where you lived by that point. I knew I could wait. So, I came back the next day. I began to follow you. I began to learn your habits, your movements. Tell me...there were a few days when you went missing. I didn’t see you. Where were you then?"
