Pulling the duvet over my head, I shut my eyes tightly. I was only eight and lived with my mum and sister. Desperately, I made myself think of all the happy things I loved – fairies, ponies, princesses.
Maybe that would help… But then I heard it.
Footsteps on the landing outside. Then the flap-flap-flap of the laundry basket’s wicker lid slamming closed and opening again. It happened every night.
I pulled the covers further over my head.
I saw people out of the corner of my eye
Please go away! Please! I thought frantically.
I was so frightened.
