    Chapter 1

Iwas so frustrated that even after everything I had been through and the victory I felt I had won against him, Dr. Russell had still managed to get into my head. I wondered if I would ever be free of him. I had felt so elated, yet he somehow still had that ability to unsettle me with his veiled threats. Surely, he was bluffing. I couldn't believe he still had any kind of real power to disrupt my life, but did he?

There he was, gnawing away at my sense of satisfaction and my peace of mind. Was he even thinking about it, wherever he was? Was he sitting in his apartment gazing out of those huge windows, brooding, licking his wounds, plotting his revenge? Or was he finding comfort in one of the nurses who trailed after him?

I had seen those nurses watching me when I went past, whispering to one another in the hope that I would not catch any of their conversations. Nevertheless, I had caught snatches of their talk over the days,

    "Obsessed with him."

Getting drunk at work he told me.

Trying to let him down gently.

I had continued to hold my head high. If they were that stupid to believe whatever nonsense he was filling their heads with then there was not much I could do about it, and not much I cared to do about it. They could either find out the hard way or not. It might sound cold, or uncaring, but I couldn't afford to worry about what every gullible young nurse thought. They knew he had a reputation. Sure, I had known and it hadn't helped me, but I hadn't known just how bad he was. They had heard what he was like and had decided to take his side. That was on them, not me.

All I could worry about was myself, my sister, my career, our life, and my five-year plan. I only cared about looking ahead, not backwards or even side-to-side.

I looked at some of these young nurses sometimes and saw them mooning over the younger and more dashing doctors, particularly surgeons, and I thought it was crazy. Hospitals are not some hook-up spot. They are not romantic in any way. Sure, I might sound hypocritical saying that now after everything that had happened, but I think I knew what I was talking about.

And besides, everything that had happened with myself and Dr. Russell had happened outside of the hospital, hadn't it? Oh yes, within the hospital he had liked preaching all his talk about professionalism. Well, he'd made himself look quite the professional, hadn't he?

However, for all of my talk about how hospitals were not in the least bit romantic, I still kept finding myself thinking back to Dr. Clark—asking if he could take me for dinner. Wow! I had wondered about the kindness he had shown me, even leading up to my disciplinary hearing. I had wondered if it was all just a way to get at Dr. Russell and wind him up. I had also wondered if he was just a kind man reaching out to someone who was having a bad time. Both of these options had seemed likely. He had a mischievous way about him, and a clear disdain for Dr. Russell. That combination could make him want to show him up and be a thorn in Dr. Russell’s
