Ifelt my phone vibrate in my purse and hastily glanced up at the clock. It was already after five, and I knew Maddy had made reservations for six. My sister was well aware that rush hour traffic in Los Angeles was a pain to deal with, but she also knew that Cleo’s was one of the most popular new restaurants in town, and she’d had to reserve a spot when she could get it. Quickly, I gathered my files and stepped into the hall, heading for the front desk.

I’d been looking forward to the evening for quite some time. As a nurse, it was difficult for me to find time to get out and enjoy myself. It felt like I was always either just getting off work or having to rush home and get to bed early so I could start an early shift the next morning.

It had been a while since I’d seen my sister. Though I’m technically her older sister—by three minutes—we are identical twins. Physically identical, anyway. As far as our personalities and professions are concerned, we are as different as night and day.

I enrolled in college as soon as I got out of high school, determined to make a career for myself in the medical field. I studied hard and worked long hours to pay for my tuition, and got a nursing job the day I was given my degree.

Maddy, on the other hand, chose an entirely different route. Using the assets she had been blessed with, Maddy chose to pursue modeling, and had since become one of the more prominent faces to be seen on the magazine covers of Los Angeles. I didn’t envy her; in fact, I was proud of her for her ability to make it in such a viciously competitive field.

I pulled my phone out of my purse to check my taxi app as I headed for the hospital’s exit, hoping my ride was already waiting for me. I sent a quick text to let Maddy know that I was just off work and on my way, and to go ahead and order our first round of drinks. Though we weren’t as close as we once were, Maddy knew what I liked.

I wanted to get to the restaurant as soon as possible, but my apartment was on the way, so I decided to stop and change into something better suited for a night out. After all, it had been weeks since I had last seen my sister, and she was a professional model. Identical to her or not, I was going to have to make an effort if I wanted to look the part.

Asking the driver to wait outside my complex and promising I’d only be five minutes, I booked it up the stairs and into my apartment. I yanked off my scrubs and the clothes under them as I walked through the living room to my bedroom.

After slipping into a small red cocktail dress and letting my long, auburn waves fall about my shoulders, I went simple yet sultry with my makeup and spritzed on some of my favorite perfume. I couldn’t help but smile at myself as I glanced in the mirror and looked over my attire. I looked like I was getting ready for an actual date—not a date with my twin sister.

It had been a long time since I had gone on any kind of date with a man, but I couldn’t say that I felt like I was missing anything. I was so busy juggling work with my social life, I didn’t see how I was going to fit a relationship into my schedule, anyway. Besides that, the brief encounters I did have with men often originated from them mistaking me for my sister.

Maddy the Model. Maddy, the girl with the looks and the attitude to match. Maddy, the girl every man wanted but no man could handle. Yes, whenever I got asked out, I knew that the man in front of me wasn’t picturing some nurse walking around a hospital in scrubs—he was picturing my twin sister, rolling around on the hood of a sports car in a tiny string bikini.

Maddy was the fun one, not me. Ever since we were young girls, she was the one who was always pushing the limits. She was the one all the boys wanted in high school, and often spent time in detention. She was the one who had all the cool stories—she was the one who had all the fun.

I grabbed my clutch and hurried back down the stairs, hoping that my ride wasn’t too irritated with having to wait for me.

The car was waiting in the same place I had left it, engine still running, and as I apologetically slipped into the back seat, my phone went off once more. Maddy was becoming impatient for me to get there.

    I rolled my eyes.

A few minutes later, I was walking into Cleo’s, my heart beating with anticipation as I walked through the doors and scanned the tables for my sister.

It wasn’t at all unusual for people to do a double take when we were in
