    Chapter 1

D ave! Dave! I cried out, again and again into the darkness, trying to be heard above the sound of the crashing waves and the howling wind.

I was clinging on with all of my waning strength. I kept looking for him, but there was no sign of him.

I could feel myself fading away. I knew that soon I would be washed away into the dark water, into the black nothingness, and then that would be it. I would be gone.

I closed my eyes, ready to let go. I heard the roar of the water getting louder and louder. But then I realized, it wasn’t the water after all. It was something else.

I opened my eyes and had to squint right away. There was a light shining down at me. For a moment I was confused. Was this it? Was this what death looked like?

    But no, that wasn’t it.

Grab hold! I heard a voice cry out. I couldn’t see who was shouting. But then I saw something, round and floating. It was a lifebuoy! I reached out but I couldn’t quite reach. The water dragged it away from me slightly. I knew that I had to go for it.

I was scared, but with my absolute last ounce of strength, I threw myself at it. I grabbed a hold. I felt as though I was going to lose my grip, but then I managed to hold on. I felt the ring rise and fall in the waves. I knew that I couldn’t continue like this.

But then I felt it pulled towards the light.

My grip slipped and I went under, but I managed to hold on all the same. I came back to the surface, coughing water from my lungs.

Then arms reached down, grabbed me, and pulled me upwards.

And just like that I was on the deck of a boat.

Ma’am? a voice said, Are you OK?

I tried to speak but I was gasping, desperately pulling air in. I rolled over onto my front and tried to stand up, but I only got as far as my hands and knees. I started coughing. Someone came and put a blanket around me.

    Ma’am? the voice said again.

    Dave, I managed to gasp.

    Dave?

He’s still in the water! I managed to say before I collapsed onto the rolling deck of the boat, coughing.

What? There’s someone else in there?

I looked up, unable to make out the features of the man standing above me. I couldn’t get any words out; all I could do was nod.

Get her inside, we’ll keep looking, the man said.

I was pulled to my feet by strong arms. I looked around and saw two men in life jackets. They half led, half dragged me towards a doorway. I was staggering from side to side, but they managed to keep me reasonably stable.

As soon as they led me through the doorway things calmed down. There were a few steps leading downwards. The boat was still rolling in the stormy waters, but the noise was dulled, and the wind and water were no longer beating me down. It was warm.

Here, take a seat, one of them said, pointing me towards a seat bolted to the floor. I sat down.

Despite the fact that the interior was warmer, my clothes were still soaking wet and freezing. I found myself shivering. I looked about. I was in a small room below deck. There was a small kitchen area in one corner. A galley, I thought to myself, wildly, They call it a galley on a boat.

The two men were in yellow waterproof outfits.

    Who are you? I asked.

Lifeguard. Someone called us to report that they saw a small boat out when the storm hit so we headed out. Here, there’s a small bathroom there, go and get out of those wet clothes, dry yourself off.

    But I don’t have anything...

Don’t worry, we’ve got your back, and he leaned over to a locker that was attached to the wall and pulled out a bundle of clothes.

They might not fit too well, but they’re warm and dry.

    Thank you, I said.

I went into the cramped bathroom and dried myself off with a towel that they had handed to me on my way in. I got changed into the clothing they had given me. They were pretty ill-fitting, it was true, but they were warm and dry.

I stepped out and was immediately handed a hot, black, coffee. I just held it for a moment, feeling the warmth in my hands. I was still shivering, but I was warming up all the same.

We’ll have to have you checked out when you get back. You might have hypothermia. It was the man who had instructed me to use the bathroom. I got a good look at him. He was short but broad shouldered with a red, weather worn face and a light, sandy brown beard.

Dave... I began, wanting to know what was going on.

They’re still looking for him. Don’t you worry, we’re the best at what we do.

But it wasn’t very comforting for me. I sipped the coffee, feeling it warming me from inside. The two men went back onto deck to help, leaving me alone, sitting in the corner. I was warming up, yet for some reason I couldn’t stop shivering.

I could hear voices calling out above the wind on the deck. I kept hoping that I’d hear Dave’s voice, that I’d hear them pulling him on board and then, finally, at last, they’d bring him down below deck to me. He’d be freezing and exhausted, just as I had been, but we’d be back together once again. I’d rush to him, hold him close, never let him go ever again. I’d cover him with kisses. I’d tell him that I loved him.

These were the thoughts that went through my head as I waited and waited.

But as time went on my hope started to fade.

Eventually one of the men came below deck. He looked awkward, uncomfortable.

Ma’am, he said, I’m afraid there’s no sign of him. The storm isn’t letting up, and we’ve got to get back to shore.

No! Please, you have to keep looking. He must be out there, somewhere.

I’m sorry. I really am. But there’s no sign of him around the boat and, well...you’ve seen what the water is like. You must see how the situation is.

He shrugged slightly, unsure what else to say to me. But I knew what he meant. Dave was gone.

    Chapter 2

The crew left me mostly alone as we headed back to shore. I sat with my head down, holding on to the cooling coffee cup in my hands, lost in my thoughts.

I couldn’t believe it. Our day had been so perfect. And now...now I had lost everything.
