    Twenty-Four Hours - Noel Slade

It was three in the morning when I heard the familiar sounds. Drunken kids, probably college students, were doubtless having a grand old time on my property. Again.

I sat up in my bed, groaning at the ache in my limbs. A couple years ago I’d never felt so old. Of course, a couple years ago the Brier River Company hadn’t been in business. The company had risen up out of nowhere, taking advantage of the Brier’s naturally winding currents. I hadn’t minded it at first. Then again, I hadn’t thought of the repercussions it would have on my small plot of land and the surrounding territory.

The river was only a couple of miles from the borders of my small ranch, but once it turned into a tourist attraction, it was as if its area expanded into my land, which wasn’t expansive to begin with. I couldn’t afford any kind of elaborate fencing to take care of the problem, so that was out of the question. I just had to deal with the incidences as they occurred. Like right now. I heard some heavy shuffling coming from nearby. I suspected it was a young couple looking for a private place to fuck. That’s what it was most of the time. A horny boy and girl rutting in my backyard, in my stables, and even on my porch on one occasion. I was tired of it, frankly. The couple on the porch had been too drunk and involved in themselves to even notice me coming out of my house to send them away. I’d stood there in the open doorway, trying to look imposing, my arms crossed over my chest, but it did no good. The young pair just kept on fucking. I hadn’t even bothered to tell them anything. That was the one and only time I’d called the authorities. It had been a boiling point for me. After that, I notified the
