Zoe
AS WE LOADED UP JACK’S car with Christmas gifts, our parents stood on the front porch, exchanging hugs and well-wishes. The holiday had been a lot of fun. I loved getting to visit home, but I was glad I was able to have my own place as well. Jack and I were both close to our parents, but we needed our space.
Jack, remember to look out for your little sister,
my mom said, her voice laced with concern.
I couldn’t help but groan inwardly. I was twenty, and Jack was only a year older. We were hardly children, and I didn’t need a babysitter.
Don’t worry, Mom,
Jack reassured her. I’ve got an eye on her.
I rolled my eyes at him, but he winked in return. It was a playful joke, but I knew it held a certain truth. Jack liked having me around to keep an eye on me. Not that I needed it, of course.
Thank you for all the goodies,
I said as I hugged my mom. I can’t wait to add a feminine touch to the house. Living with stinky boys has made me long for pink and fluffy things.
No,
Jack said. You’re not putting anything pink and definitely nothing fluffy in the house.
You know you like it,
I teased.
You know she makes us do the dishes every day,
Jack complained.
Oh, the horror,
I said dryly.
I think it’s a good idea to have you living there,
Mom said to me. You can keep him in line as well.
She’s always been a tattletale,
Jack complained.
I’m personally very happy to have you both looking out for each other,
Dad said.
Me too,
Mom agreed. It’s so nice that the two of you chose to go to the same college so close by.
We should get going,
Jack said.
Someone has plans,
Mom laughed.
I’m sure he wants to get back for a hot date,
I said with a smile.
As a matter of fact, I do have plans.
I know it’s not cool to spend so much time at home, but we do love it when we’re all together for the holidays,
Mom said, getting a little sentimental.
I gave her a hug. And we like coming home. You keep spoiling us like this and we might not leave.
Oh no,
Dad said. No, no, no. Your mother and I are enjoying our golden years. We need our space and privacy, so you two better not get too comfortable here.
Don’t worry, Dad,
Jack said. We won’t overstay our welcome.
I went back into the house to check my room for anything I might have left. I took a second to look around. My room was exactly as I left it when I moved out. I knew they would one day change it into an office or gym, but for now, they kept it as it was. It was a reminder I always had a place to call home. Feeling just a little nostalgic, I turned and walked out.
In a way, I was saying goodbye to the old me. When I went back to school and the house, I was going to shed the last elements of childhood. I was finally stepping into womanhood. The next time I came home, I was going to be a different woman.
As I walked out of my room, I saw Jack waiting for me by the front door. He had a smirk on his face that I recognized all too well. What’s that look for?
I asked, rolling my eyes.
Nothing,
he said, still smirking. Just wondering if you were going to change your mind about going back to school or maybe you were going to grab that big-ass teddy bear.
No,
I scoffed. I miss home. Don’t you miss the good ol’ days? When our biggest worry was whether Mom was going to make Brussels sprouts for dinner. Or we had to thin about who was going to pick the movie we watched after Friday dinner.
He rolled his eyes. Since when did you get to be a sap?
I playfully punched him in the arm. Shut up, Jack. You know I’m just being sentimental.
He chuckled and opened the front door. Let’s go. I want a beer and hopefully the company of a beautiful lady.
We walked toward Jack’s car with our parents right behind us.
You two drive safely,
Dad said.
Call us when you get there safe!
Mom waved at us as we got into the car.
We’ll see you soon,
I called out the window. Thank you for everything!
Jack started down the road. We both were quiet for the first few minutes of the drive. He could act all tough and stuff, but I knew he was feeling a little something about leaving home. He could pretend he was this tough guy, but he was a softie on the inside.
I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to have a drink and hang out without worrying about using a coaster or keeping my feet off the furniture,
Jack said.
You had drinks,
I reminded him. And it’s not the worst thing in the world to act like you have manners. You weren’t raised in a barn.
He snorted. I was drinking with my dad. That’s not having drinks. We drank that piss beer he likes.
I laughed. I got to drink Mom’s wine.
As we hit the road and the conversation flowed, Jack turned to me, a grin playing on his lips. You know, you don’t have to worry about not getting into student housing on campus. Things are working out pretty well at the house.
I raised an eyebrow, curious. Oh, really? And why is that?
Jack chuckled. Because I like having you around. It’s nice to keep an eye on you.
I laughed at his honesty. Is that so? I thought it was just about me keeping the house clean.
He laughed too, but I knew he meant it. We were close. For a long time, he had been my best friend. I knew a lot of siblings fought, but we didn’t. We genuinely got along. Unfortunately, knowing he was looking out for me made me feel a twinge of guilt. Jack didn’t know about Ian. He would be furious to know I’d been seeing his best friend behind his back.
Of course, the housekeeping is a bonus,
Jack teased, breaking through my thoughts. But seriously, it’s good to have you there. I don’t want you to think you’re a burden or intruding. We all like having you there. It’s a nice balance to all the testosterone. You keep us in line.
I smiled at him, hiding my guilt. Well, don’t get too used to it. You know I’ll be heading back to the dorms as soon as I can. Not that it hasn’t been a blast hanging out with you all and picking up stinky socks, but I’m looking forward to getting back to living in a more female-friendly environment.
Jack nodded. That’s cool. I get it.
He may have been my overprotective big brother, but I knew he genuinely cared about me. As I stared out of the car window, my thoughts drifted back to Ian, the one secret I was keeping from my family. I knew my parents liked Ian. They’d already kind of adopted him because he was Jack’s friend. I couldn’t imagine they would have a problem with me dating him. It wasn’t like he was a bad guy.
Jack and I talked about our upcoming classes. He was thrilled to be done with the soccer season. I had a feeling the partying in the house was going to increase. The guys were going to be living it up for their last semester.
I was practically crawling out of my skin with anticipation. It had been nearly a month since I’d seen Ian, and the yearning to get my hands all over him had me on edge. My phone was going to burn up with the fiery texts that had been going back and forth between us. I was a virgin, but with the exploration we had already done, I felt like a woman that knew her way around a man.
I tried to hide my restlessness, but Jack had noticed. He shot me a curious look as we drove into town. What’s with you?
he asked. You’re fidgeting.
Excited about the new semester,
I told him with a shrug. And dance.
Jack raised an eyebrow, clearly not convinced. You seem more edgy than usual, Zoe. Everything okay?
I brushed it off, choosing to stick with my partially truthful explanation. It’s just that this semester is going to be different. No more boring classes. I’m finally diving into my major. I have the shelter to volunteer at. So, yeah, I’m pretty stoked.
Jack laughed, seeming to understand my nervous energy. I get it. The excitement is contagious. It’s going to be a great semester. The last one. I can’t wait to sleep in and never listen to another lecture again.
Uh, won’t you be getting a job?
I joked.
Yes, but no early practices. And maybe I’ll work for myself. I’ll work when I want. I was thinking about getting a part-time job. If you can do volunteering, I should be able to hold down a job.
I was also looking forward to getting back to my volunteering job. It was a cause I cared deeply about, and the sense of purpose it gave me was something I cherished. Just don’t do anything that ruins your GPA,
I warned. Mom and Dad will kick your ass.
I can handle a few hours.
I know I’m going to be so busy this semester I’m not going to have much time to do anything,
I sighed. I signed up for a new hip-hop dance class.
Hip-hop?
he questioned. Like shaking your ass?
I laughed at his summarization. No. Sure, there is some booty shaking, but no more than other dance types.
It was a stark departure from the contemporary style I’d been doing my whole life, and I had signed up as part of my personal mission to step out of my comfort zone. I loved dancing and wanted to try something new.
Promise me one thing. If you’re going to that hip-hop class, I better not see you twerking.
I laughed, rolling my eyes. Don’t worry, Jack. I’ll try to keep my twerking skills under control, just for you.
Good, because you know I’ll call Mom if I catch you!
As Jack and I entered our house, there he was—Ian, casually leaning against the wall, a devilish grin on his face. I couldn’t help but feel a rush of excitement, mixed with a little anxiety. It took every ounce of self-control in me to act naturally around him.
Hey, you two,
Ian greeted us, giving Jack a friendly slap on the back and me a lingering, heated look that sent shivers down my spine.
Hey, Ian,
I replied, trying to keep my voice steady and my expression neutral. I was playing it cool on the surface, but inside, I was practically trembling with desire.
Jack, oblivious to the charged atmosphere, started discussing his plans for the evening, which involved going out with some friends. He glanced at me. You coming, Zoe?
I hesitated, my eyes briefly meeting Ian’s. Nah, I think I’ll stay in tonight. I’ve got some catching up to do.
Chapter Two
Ian
I PULLED UP TO THE house, knowing that today was the day. I couldn’t wait to make love to Zoe. It felt like it was the right time. The time we were apart had only made me want her more. The spicy texts we’d been exchanging since she’d been home had left me on the edge. She was a virgin, but damn the girl knew how to tempt a man to the point my balls were more purple than blue at this point. I needed to get laid.
I snuck the bottle of champagne, flowers, and new box of condoms up to my room and hid it all in the trunk I’d been using to stash my stuff. I missed having my own bedroom and my own space, but Carlos had started seeing someone and was rarely there. The house had felt empty with everyone visiting home. I had come back for a few days but ended up going right back home.
I checked the time, anxious to see her again. She should be arriving any time. But I had to play it cool. If Jack picked up on anything, he was going to kick my ass, and I wouldn’t get the chance to be with her at all.
The minutes dragged on like hours as I waited for Zoe to arrive. I paced the room, trying to calm my nerves and the growing anticipation in my groin. Finally, I heard a car pull into the driveway, and my heart leaped with excitement. I rushed to the window, peering out to see Zoe emerging, her long legs stretching out gracefully. My mouth went dry as I watched her sashay up to the front door.
I took a deep breath and headed down the stairs, trying to appear nonchalant. Zoe was already inside, chatting with Jack as I entered the living room. I couldn’t help but stare at her and imagine what it was going to be like to finally be with her. We’d certainly done everything else.
Hey,
Jack said. Come help me with the groceries.
You went grocery shopping?
I asked.
Zoe laughed. Our parents went grocery shopping, and they just happened to have all of this lying around.
Ah,
I said and nodded.
It’s not just groceries,
Jack muttered. I think they believe we’re sitting on the floor with no dishes or furniture.
They want to help,
Zoe laughed.
I couldn’t focus on their conversation. All I could think about was Zoe and how much I wanted to be alone with her. I could practically taste her. I couldn’t wait to hear her whimper and moan when I brought her to orgasm over and over.
Jack walked out of the house to get another load of stuff. Zoe walked over to me, her hips swaying seductively. Are you okay?
she asked, running her fingers through my hair.
I’m more than okay,
I said, unable to resist leaning in and kissing her soft lips. Don’t. I can’t. You are killing me. I’m barely keeping myself from throwing you onto the couch and showing you how much I’ve missed you.
She laughed and stepped away. Me too.
I walked out of the house to help Jack carry things in. Their parents had sent them home with all kinds of food and some stuff like a new lamp, a rug, and a
