Obsession Part 3 - E.J. Adams
CHAPTER 1
I sat trembling and stunned by what Ian was saying to me. It seemed to be coming from out of the blue—then again, Ian had been dropping hints over the years. Hints that Eva had picked up, hints that I too must have seen. I just never thought that Ian would ever act on those hints. That he would ever actually move to Manhattan. I was shocked. I didn’t know what to say.
He was looking at me with those big plaintive eyes and I couldn’t seem to force myself to come up with the right thing to say. My mind was clawing for something but couldn’t latch onto a clear semblance of thought.
Are you going to drink that?
He pointed to the tea that had been sitting in front of me for who knows how long.
Yes, of course.
I picked up my mug then changed my mind. Why don’t I get us something stronger?
I brought out a bottle of vodka that I normally saved for my parents, pouring a bit into each of our mugs.
Russian tea?
He lifted his eyebrows. He really was beautiful. His cheeks showed patches of red and his hair was large, showing bulbous knotted curls from the humidity and rain.
I recapped the vodka and sat back down at the table.
Why the decision?
I looked at him, Why now?
I wanted to feel the linear stream of thought. To understand what his process had been, how he had arrived at this decision when I was so clearly out of the loop.
After our last time together in London, I was going mad thinking about you. I loved having you so close, seeing you all the time.
He picked up his tea and took a sip, keeping his hands around the warm mug. No other woman has ever satisfied me like you do. No other woman thrills me more than you do.
I smiled, unsure if I was supposed to say something or if I could continue to listen. The fact that my mind wasn’t working properly made that decision easy.
There isn’t anyone I like to be with more then you, Tatyna.
He lifted a hand and pushed a stray piece of hair off my face. His fingers felt good. They felt right, but something inside of me felt wrong at that same time.
I couldn’t deny that I had strong feelings for Ian. We’d been very close for a long while now. We were fun together and he made me laugh at all sorts of things that wouldn’t have been funny to anyone else. I knew him so well. I understood his moods, his faces. I knew his smell when he woke up in the morning. Even though we’d set up our boundaries, these things had crept through the cracks of our walls. I’d just never thought an actual relationship was possible between us.
When I let myself believe it was impossible then it all seemed that much safer. There was very little risk. But, things had changed. Now it was suddenly possible—or it could be. All I had to do was to say yes.
Here you are, in New York,
I said. I was saying the obvious but it all seemed surreal to me. He was in New York for me—willing to move to my city to be with me.
Yes,
he said. Here I am.
He had a shy smile on his lips and I couldn’t help but smile back. My mind was a tumult but I also knew how big this was. How much he would be giving up for me.
And wouldn’t it be amazing to have Ian for a boyfriend? Maybe even more? I could imagine us so well together in New York. He would go to funky art house movies with me and we’d take in all the new shows. He could do his business here and I could visit him at work in the financial district. I could imagine his things in this very apartment. I could easily make room for him in my huge closet, at least I could try my best. We could always do more built in’s or something to give us more organizational space. We could order food from all over the city, go out to try the
