    Doomed - Ray Forster

Life doesn’t prepare you for a whole lot. Maybe that goes without saying, though. Maybe it shouldn’t. Maybe a lot of things that go without saying should be said, and vice versa. Maybe people would be better off if we knew what we were supposed to know.

There are some things that life should be able to prepare you for: broken hearts, betrayed friendships, death of a family member, running a business - stuff like that. But life doesn’t prepare you for  any of that, and it sure as shit doesn’t prepare you for watching a man get electrocuted in front of you or cleaning blood off of your hands or tracking a murderer down in the hills of San Francisco. Those were all things I never thought I needed to be prepared for, but life has a funny way of just throwing things at you and seeing how much you can endure before you just keel over. Luckily, I was able to endure it. But this guy laying in front of me... well, he couldn’t. And back when this all started, I didn’t think I would be able to endure that either. But you probably don’t have any idea of what I’m talking about. Let’s go back a few weeks ago to get you all caught up, what do you say?

It was June 5th when Jess came back from the war. It was a rainy day, which may sound redundant in San Francisco, but it stuck out in my mind because I knew Jess hated the rain. At his request, I wasn’t to make a big deal about his return. Absent from the walls were any banners or anything that could potentially say, Welcome Home, Jess! He knocked on my door and then immediately opened it anyway. He was never one for waiting. Hey, man, he said, closing the door behind him, clearly disgruntled.

Forget to bring an umbrella? I asked him.

Funny, he said, shaking his jacket off over my doormat. You have anything to eat? The airport food was terrible.

I have some chicken and some leftover Chinese. I could make something with that, I suggested.

    "Sounds good.
