The Mindful Spine - Gertrude Swanson

    Understanding Back Pain

    The Anatomy of the Spine

To effectively address back pain, it's essential to have a basic understanding of the spine's anatomy. The spine is a complex structure made up of 33 individual bones called vertebrae, which are stacked on top of each other and connected by ligaments, muscles, and intervertebral discs.

The spine is divided into five regions

Cervical spine (neck) 7 vertebrae (C1-C7)

    2. Thoracic spine (mid-back) 12 vertebrae (T1-T12)

    3. Lumbar spine (lower back) 5 vertebrae (L1-L5)

    4. Sacrum 5 fused vertebrae (S1-S5)

    5. Coccyx (tailbone) 4 fused vertebrae

Between each vertebra, there are intervertebral discs that act as shock absorbers and allow for flexibility in the spine. These discs are composed of a tough, fibrous outer layer called the annulus fibrosus and a soft, gel-like center called the nucleus pulposus.

The spinal cord runs through the center of the vertebrae, and spinal nerves exit the spinal column through openings called foramina. These nerves carry signals between the brain and the rest of the body, controlling movement and sensation.

    Common Causes of Back Pain

Back pain can arise from a variety of factors, including:

    1. Muscle Strains and Sprains

Muscle strains and sprains are among the most common causes of back pain. They can occur due to

    Overexertion or improper lifting techniques

    Sudden, awkward movements

    Poor posture or prolonged sitting

    2. Herniated or Bulging Discs

Intervertebral discs can become damaged or worn down over time, causing them to bulge or herniate. When this happens, the disc can press on nearby nerves, causing pain, numbness, or weakness in the back, legs, or arms.

    3. Degenerative Disc Disease

As we age, the intervertebral discs naturally lose hydration and become less flexible. This process, known as degenerative disc disease, can lead to pain and stiffness in the back.

    4. Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spaces within the spine, which can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. This condition is often caused by age-related changes in the spine, such as osteoarthritis or thickening of the ligaments.

    5. Sciatica

Sciatica is a specific type of back pain that occurs when the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg, becomes compressed or irritated. This can cause pain, numbness, or weakness in the affected leg.

    6. Psychological Factors

Emotional stress, anxiety, and depression can contribute to back pain by causing muscle tension and altering pain perception. In some cases, psychological factors may
