The Complete Asthma Guide - Gertrude Swanson

    Introduction

Breathing is something we take for granted. We need oxygen to live, and breathing is how we take that vital element in. But there's more to it than just keeping us alive.

Has anyone in your family or circle of friends been diagnosed with asthma?

Consequently, you might be confused by the seemingly endless questions no one knows the answers to.It is easy to define asthma in its simplest form, but almost everything else is complicated.

There is no universally accepted definition for bronchial asthma. Any asthma patient who has experienced labored breathing can tell you that it can range from a tad uncomfortable to life-threatening.

Asthma is a chronic lung condition that inflames and narrows the airways. It is one of the most common chronic childhood conditions, and its incidence has increased dramatically in the past few decades.

While the exact cause of asthma is unknown, it is thought to be due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Asthma sufferers are more likely to have allergies, and exposure to certain environmental triggers, such as dust mites, animal dander, and air pollution. They can aggravate the condition.

There is no cure for asthma, but it can be controlled with medication. In severe cases, asthma can be life-threatening, so it is important to seek medical help if you or your child experiences any asthma symptoms.

Asthma symptoms can vary from mild to severe, and can include shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, and tightness in the chest. Asthma attacks can also be set off by exposure to triggers, such as cold air, exercise, or emotional stress, etc.

If you think you or your child may have asthma, it is vital to see a doctor for a proper diagnosis. Once asthma is diagnosed, your doctor will work with you to create a treatment plan. This may include medication, avoidance of triggers, and education about how to manage the condition.

Treatment usually involves taking recommended bronchial asthma medications and lifestyle changes, such as avoiding environmental allergens. However, in some cases, hospitalization or surgical treatment may be required to resolve the airway blockage caused by bronchial asthma. The muscle tissue lining the airway begins to tighten, narrowing the airway and allowing less air to enter the lungs. Inflammation causes the mucus to thicken rapidly, narrowing the airway even more.

Here are some tips from doctors to help you manage your bronchial asthma:

    1. Identity and avoid triggers that can worsen your symptoms. Things like smoke, pollen, pet dander, and cold air can trigger an asthma attack. If you can, try to avoid these triggers or at least limit your exposure to them.

    2. Take your medications as prescribed. If you're prescribed asthma medication, make sure you take it as directed. This includes both long-term and quick-relief medications.

    3. Create an asthma action plan. This is a plan that outlines what you should do in case of an asthma attack. Make sure you share it with your family and friends, so they know what to do in an emergency.

    4. Get regular checkups. Even if you're feeling fine, it's important to see your doctor for regular checkups. This way, you can make sure your asthma is under control and catch any problems early.

    5. Stay healthy. Eating right, exercising, and getting enough sleep all help to keep your body strong. This can help you better manage your asthma.
