    From the Garden of Masnavi (1) - Ramazan F. Güzel

    FOREWORD

    This work in your hands is a unique book of poetry and moral lessons inspired by some of the stories found in the valuable work of the Islamic Mystic and Poet Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi, the Masnavi.

    We can liken it to the diligent efforts of a bee, collecting, gathering, and transforming the pollen and nectar from the various flowers in the garden into honey in its hive.

    The first book in this series is a bouquet made up of 'White Lilies' and distilled from them.

    Just as each flower has its own meaning, so too does the 'Lily Flower' have deep and diverse meanings. The lily, generally, carries a sense of honor and royalty; it represents nobility and high ethical values. Additionally, some varieties of lilies are used as symbols of blessings and abundance in wedding ceremonies.

    The meaning of the Lily flower also varies according to its different colors:

    White lilies represent purity, innocence, and virginity;

    Orange lilies symbolize enthusiasm, energy, and passion,

    Pink lilies represent elegance;

    Yellow lilies symbolize happiness and vitality.

    The lily is also a symbol of spiritual purification and elevation. Indeed, in Buddhism, the lily flower is considered a symbol of enlightenment and spiritual purification. The silhouette of this flower rising in water is symbolized as the desire to transcend the material world and achieve spiritual purity.

    Similarly, the poems created based on the stories in this book reflect such wisdom and quest for purification!

    Similarly, the poems created based on the stories in this book reflect such wisdom and quest for purification!

    As we attempt to compile the meanings with these words, the reflection of the truths they reveal into symbols and images has transformed into colorful visuals on the pages. We believe that words and images complement and reinforce each other; what do you think?

    ...

    Before delving into the poems in the book, we would also like to provide a brief overview of our source of inspiration, Mevlana.

    Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi: An Islamic Mystic and Poet

    Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi, a 13th-century mystic, philosopher, and poet, is among the great figures of Islamic mysticism. While his exact date of birth is uncertain, he is believed to have been born on September 30, 1207, in the city of Balkh, located within present-day Afghanistan. His father, Bahâeddin Veled, was a renowned scholar and mystic. Balkh was part of the Great Seljuk Empire at the time, but due to the Mongol invasion, Mevlana's family migrated to Anatolia, where he spent most of his life in the city of Konya.

    Mevlana lived in a period of intellectual and cultural flourishing in the Islamic world. Anatolia was a melting pot of different cultures and religions, which strongly influenced Mevlana's thoughts and philosophy. He also lived during a time of social and political turmoil, and he emerged as a spiritual guide and voice of hope for the people.

    Mevlana's most significant work is the Masnavi, a lengthy poem in which he expresses his teachings and philosophy. The Masnavi addresses religious and moral subjects while exploring the depths of mysticism. The work has had a profound impact in the Islamic world and has been translated into many languages over the centuries.

    His poetry also reflects the era in which he lived, with themes such as love, death, and the love of God. Divan-i Kebir is one of his most famous collections of poetry and has been translated into many languages.

    Mevlana is also known as the founder of the Mevlevi Order, also known as the Whirling Dervishes. He provided spiritual teachings to his disciples and taught them the ‘sema’, a form of rotating dance that symbolizes the unity of God and universal love.

    When Mevlana passed away on December 17, 1273, he viewed death not just as the end of a physical existence but as the soul's return to God. His tomb, located in Konya, Turkey, at the Mevlana Mausoleum, is visited by thousands of people each year.

    Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi has left a lasting impact both in the Islamic world and globally. His works and teachings continue to provide spiritual guidance, and his message of love, tolerance, and universal unity remains relevant today.

    I am also someone who has been nourished in the spiritual climate and atmosphere of that person in Konya, where I was born and raised.

    Throughout my life spanning more than half a century, his works and narratives have always been a source of light and guidance for me…

    I can say that his narratives, tales, and teachings, which he obtained by filtering through the various cultures and religions of the thousands of years old geographies such as Iran, Afghanistan, Central Asia, China, the Middle East, Anatolia, have formed a layer of flora within me over the years. Now, I am sharing with you the poems and compositions I have compiled inspired by them.

    I enjoyed writing and creating visuals as well. Each of them created tastes like honey on my palate, in my heart; just as honeys
