    PROLOGUE

On April 3, 2018, the author received a text from her mother asking her to talk to her about a new show. The author had been busy with meetings for the pilot episode of a new half-hour comedy, Simpson Street, which would never see the light of day. The author had been blessed with an acting job that was as close as an actor can get to stability and security. However, she felt unmoored and heeded a deep call to adventure, filled with a new set of unknowns.

The author's parents had not made special time to talk unless something was wrong, and when accommodations were made, it was never good news. When the light changed, she turned left to head up the canyon and called her husband, Nnamdi. He asked what was going on, but she couldn't imagine it was good. There had been tough conversations between her parents and her about painful family secrets that they had kept from her in an effort to love and protect her as best they could.

The author knew that it was not good news, but she decided to wade in. She texted her mother the next light and headed back east, toward whatever talk awaited her. The author's mother's text was a reminder of the importance of having conversations and understanding one's own feelings and experiences.

The author describes their experience living in a two-bedroom condo in West Hollywood, which they bought when they were dating Nnamdi. They had moved back to New York before filming the pilot for Scandal and decided to find a permanent place to live. The apartment became the perfect landing spot for their New York-based parents, who visited for extended periods after the arrival of their daughter, Isabelle.

Upon arriving at the apartment, the author felt the weight of their parents' request to speak. As they approached the elevator, they found their mother's footsteps approaching and the door creaking open. She opened the door, looking at the author with sadness. The author's father was silhouetted by the bright sunlight in the living room, and the room felt empty and incomplete.

The author sat down in the armchair closest to the door, trying to make it as easy for them as possible. They knew that their father had been having sleepless nights and panic attacks. The author offered to talk about what was going on in the conversation, and the balcony provided an extraordinary south-facing perspective of Los Angeles.

The author's mother took a deep breath, looked down, up, and down again, and then back to her. She started to speak, saying that they had been having a hard time having a child for 43 years. The author's body felt heavy, and they strained their ears to listen to the truth.

    UNITED

In 2018, Bellamy Young and the cast of Scandal shared a final conversation on the Truman Balcony, marking the end of their seven-season relationship. Bellamy's character, Mellie Grant, had been a small supporting role in the show, but by the end of the series, she had become a central character. The conversation was the last shot on the Truman Balcony, and the entire production crew had never shot on it before.

The scenes were challenging and time-consuming due to advanced CGI technology, which allowed for the construction of the balcony and platforms surrounding it to be enveloped in walls of blue screen. Post-production used plates, taken from the actual White House balcony, which allowed for the use of actual footage. The scene reminded the cast of their own time on the real Truman Balcony, where they had spent time reflecting on the loss of anonymity and privacy.

The Truman Balcony set would be ripped apart and destroyed after the scene, but the actors felt a sense of freedom and freedom as they answered the question. They realized that their life and career had been transformed, and they had been gifted with endless opportunities, responsibilities, commitments, and priorities.

With Scandal coming to an end, both Olivia Pope and the actor playing her declared an approach to freedom, free from professional or personal obligations and expectations. This realization lifted a weight from both Olivia and the cast, symbolizing the beginnings of freedom and freedom.

The author, who has always felt pressure to succeed and get everything right, reflects on the moment when Olivia Pope and the author were saying goodbye. They were both excited about their work and the change that had been made in popular culture. However, as they were leaving, the author realized that they were also saying goodbye to their characters, Bellamy,
