Introduction
Some people have asked me, Gabriel, why did you decide to write this weight-loss book?
But before I answer that question, let me first tell you that back when I used to weigh 323 pounds, and with my waist size for pants at fifty-eight inches and while standing only five feet eight inches tall, at that point in time, the thought of writing a weight-loss book had never entered my mind. Here are some photos of myself taken back then during those years when I used to be excessively overweight, so you can see just exactly how big I actually was.
And to be totally honest with you, back then, all I ever really wanted to do was to somehow, someway, try to start losing some weight. But it always seemed like an extremely difficult and almost impossible thing to do, especially since I had been very overweight for just about my entire life.
I remember back to the day a few years earlier when my doctor had first placed me on high blood pressure medication. He said to me, Your blood pressure is so dangerously sky high, I can't believe that you haven't had a heart attack yet!
Then he told me, I have no choice but to place you on this high blood pressure medication immediately because right now, at this very moment, your life is very much at risk.
Not too long after that day, I also ended up being placed on high cholesterol medication as well. Then about three years later, toward the end of 2014, my new doctor told me, I have some serious news for you, Gabriel. The laboratory results for your blood tests came back in already, and it says you are now at the borderline of the beginning stages of diabetes.
She explained to me that the main reason this was now beginning to happen to me was that I was very overweight with very high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I had an unhealthy diet, ate way too much junk food, and I didn't do any type of cardio exercise whatsoever. She also told me that if I wanted to avoid possibly developing diabetes, then I needed to start making some serious changes in my daily eating habits by beginning to eat a very clean and healthy diet, start doing some cardio, exercising three to four times per week, and try to start losing some weight. If I didn't, things would start to get much worse for me health-wise, and I would begin to go downhill from there at a very fast pace.
When she told me all that, I began to feel kind of nervous and a little scared. I was definitely alarmed; it was like a major wake-up call for me, I guess you could say. So I told the doctor I would try my best to start doing all those things that she had recommended for me to do. Then later on, down the road, after having had plenty of time to carefully think about everything the doctor had told me that day and realizing that I needed to start making some serious changes in my life, I decided to begin a weekly exercise routine. This was right around March 2015.
Now I would like you to take a good and close look at my medical weight chart because it basically documents all the weight that I lost throughout my entire weight-loss journey. I'll be referring back to this weight chart at various times in these upcoming pages to point out and explain to you just exactly how much I weighed on certain dates and precisely how long it took me to lose that weight.
So the first date on the weight chart that I would like to talk about is March 6, 2015. As you can see, on that day, I weighed 299 pounds.
So going back to what I had mentioned, this was right around the time I had decided to start my exercise routine. I began by briskly walking laps around the outdoor track for about one hour a day, three to four times per week while listening to music on my MP3 digital music player with my headphones on. The track is about the same size as an average college or high school outdoor track. I had also begun lifting weights about three times per week for about an hour per session.
After about seven months or so of consistently doing this specific exercise routine, I started to feel pretty good and a lot better about myself. I felt I was doing great, getting in plenty of exercises and becoming a healthier person. So I decided to continue doing this same exercise routine for the following six months after that. I had been gradually walking at a faster pace and gradually lifting heavier weights throughout those thirteen months of steadily exercising.
Then about halfway through 2016, I realized that I wasn't losing any weight. As you can clearly see in my medical weight chart on May 3, 2016, my weight was still 299 pounds.
