Manifesting for Black Women - Aliyah Musa
Obsessive Thoughts:How NOT to get rid of them
I started to explore the deeper meaning of consciousness when I read these two passages that I submit to you.The first, not even on purpose, seems to be made just for those suffering from OCD as it talks about how NOT to get rid of obsessive thoughts, despite the great master mentioned there, who lived 1000 years ago.
Once, an arrogant man went to Tilopa, a great master of the Tantric tradition. He went to him and immediately said, I want to stop my thoughts and reach enlightenment. Teach me!
.
Tilopa looked at the man and said, It's straightforward; I'll give you a technique. Go home, sit and meditate, and don't think about monkeys; just that, very simple. The startled man said,
What nonsense is this? Just don't think about the monkeys? I've never thought about monkeys! Tilopa replied,
Well, it will be easier for you. Go and come back to me tomorrow to report"
The man left, but he felt deeply embarrassed. On his way, monkeys began to appear in his head. He saw different types, small and large, with black and red mouths. This left him very perplexed, What is going on? I never thought of monkeys before!
Evening came, and he was thinking of nothing but monkeys. And they got bigger and bigger and crowded his mind. The more he tried not to think about them, the more they made fun of him again.
When he closed the door to sleep, the room was packed with monkeys. They were so crowded that there was no longer any space for him. He closed his eyes and beheld the monkeys, and he opened them again, behold the monkeys. He didn't believe what was happening. He began to regret having made that peremptory request to the master.
He went to Tilopa almost mad the following day, threw himself at his feet, and begged him. Free me, save me. I don't want any more enlightenment.I want you to free me from the monkeys
The bad joke is that of the master Tilopa, right?
Free yourself from obsessive thoughts with awareness.
For millennia in the East, they have known that forcing yourself NOT TO THINK is the best way NOT to get rid of obsessive thinking. In this second passage, the story mentioned above was also commented on by another famous and controversial Indian master, Osho Raineesh, where the word awareness begins to appear. If you try to think about monkeys, they may slip your mind. But if you don't want to think about it, they will follow you everywhere.
Tilopa's lesson: he meant that if you try to stop thinking, the effort to avoid it turns into attention. So when you want to avoid something, you end up giving it more attention. So when you don't want to think a particularthought, you are already thinking it.
Remember thatyou will find yourself in the situation of the poor fellow who was taken by the obsession withmonkeys. There is no need to stop the mind. Thoughts are wanderers, uprooted, and homeless.Don't worry about them; watch them, observe them, and become aware of their presence without doing anything else.If you have thoughts, don't be sorry; the vague feeling that thought is not properis enough, and the struggle has begun. Do not struggle with thoughts. Don't become a battleground of fighting thoughts.
It is an entirely natural process; just as leaves sprout on trees, thoughts growin mind; there is nothing wrong with that. Supposethe ideas don't comefine. Stay aware and observe impartially. Do not appreciate and do not condemn; do not give any evaluation. Just become aware of what is happening inside you. Adopt the attitude of an impartial witness, become aware of their presence, and let them flow. They will stop at some point, but not because you stop them. They stop when you become more aware, but not thanks to your effort. If you hear, they don't stop;on the contrary, they resist.
There is indeeda sea of notions that every docker should gradually assimilate. Starting with the first sentence
If you try to think about monkeys, they may slip your mind. But if you don't want to think about it, they will follow you everywhere.
Here is the paradoxical functioning of the mind. If you try to focus on something, you can be sure that sooner or later, you will get distracted. How many times has this happened to us?Do we have to study? We put a lot of effort there, we begin to read, and after 10 seconds, we are already thinking about something else. So we try again, we ask ourselves to stay focused, and we leave with all the good intentions in the world. And after 10 minutes, we find ourselves again in the same sentence.
Incredible, isn’t it?
However, if we try to do the opposite, don’t think of something where we consistently think about what we don’t want to consider. It sounds incredible, but that's the way it is. The mind seems to refuse to do our will stubbornly! That's why it's so hard to get rid of obsessive thoughts.
If you try to stop thinking, trying to avoid it becomes a distraction. So if you want to avoid something, you end up paying more attention to it. If you don't want to think about a specific idea, you have already thought about it.
One of the keys to DOC is here; not only is it that you don't want to think about specific ideas, but you generally want to avoid them. Our ultimate wish would be that this doubt magically disappears from the face of the Earth and our memory so that you are finally free of obsessive thoughts.
But our (rational) mind doesn't work like that. For example: to see if that obsessive thought is still there, you have to check if it is there or not. How many times have we done this? But by automatically controlling it, you evoke it to check whether the thought is there or not;it is forced to call attention to that very thought, stimulating those brain memory banks where the memory of obsession is contained. And so you confirm your fearthat the obsessive thinkingyou were hoping to get rid of is still there.
So what is the key to freeing yourself from obsessive thoughts?
There is no need to stop the mind. Thoughts are wanderers, uprooted, homeless; don't worry about them. It is an entirely natural process: just as leaves sprout on trees, thoughts growin mind; there is nothing wrong with that. Just watch them. Observe them and become aware of their presence without doing anything else.
Here is the solution: be aware that thoughts do not have all this importance;they are thoughts thatform spontaneously in our mind (did you know that we produce more than 60,000 thoughts a day? The vast majority of them are of no use). In anyone's mind, we don't want them, and for this very reason, we give them that attention that keeps them alive (attention is energy).
Without despair in the first case and without celebrating in the second.
One of the pillars of the DOC is judgment. Becausein obsessive people, the concept of good and evil is all-encompassing and in no uncertain terms. There is only black and white in the obsessive mind without any infinite shades of colour instead of an integral and necessary part of reality. Therefore for those suffering from OCD:
Black
thoughts are absolute evil and must be avoided like apest; otherwise, terrible things will happen, and we will be horrible people
The white
thoughts are the absolute good, and we must always think about them; otherwise, terrible things will happen, and we will be horrible people
But this is a distortion that is not part of reality and that we must begin to get rid of.
The vague feeling that the thought is not proper is enough, and the fight begins. Don't struggle with thoughts. Do not become a battlefield where thoughts fight.
Here is the point:it is enough that the judgment (which, as we have seen, is falsified by the global black/white
principle) that we pass on thought is harmful and that the fierce fight immediately begins, waged within our mind, which has no other result to leave us exhausted, confused and prey with of guilt.
Negative thoughts, worry, anxiety, and fears. Who among us has never experienced such unpleasant sensations at least once?Yes, it is almost impossible not to have tried them already. But, of course, from an early age, we perceive these emotions, and in the more fortunate cases, we learn to live with and manage them; in the less favorable circumstances, we drag them out and sometimes magnify them over time.
We accept the impossibility of negative thoughts. Our mind is like a monkey that runs from one thought to another non-stop. So we try to understand how to free ourselves from thoughts and worries that are often useless and harmful. It is unnecessary that our childhood was terrible or that we have suffered some abuse for negative thoughts to be present in our minds.Few unfortunateevents can leave an indelible mark on our minds. We are genetically predisposed to pay more attention to negative experiences than positive ones.
This is simply becauseit is more
