The world can often be cruel to black women, though I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that. We deal with more stress than many can imagine under the combined forces of being both black and women. Being a black woman is its own unique struggle. We are often burdened with the weight of being caretakers without being taken care of ourselves. Violence, hate, societal pressures, and negative media messages all weigh on the mind and spirit. It can leave you feeling hopeless, exhausted, and unmotivated to live the life you truly want. Affirmations are a way to combat that hopelessness.
There’s a lot of talk in pop culture about affirmations, but what exactly are they?
Affirmations are positive statements that encourage positive thinking. Through repeating these phrases on a daily basis, you can hammer home these beliefs until they are the background noise in your head. These positive beliefs and messages will help you combat negativity, depression, anxiety, fear, and listlessness and through that change in your mental state, you can change the circumstances of your life.
There are times in our life when our minds are preoccupied with dilemmas, confusion, and self-questioning thoughts. These gloomy and cynical notions pull us down, deep into darkness and obscurity. In such a situation, positive affirmations are the only saviors we have. A positive affirmation is not a type of medical treatment that can be prescribed by a doctor, to combat negative feelings like stress, anxiety, fear, and delusions. However, one can think of them as magical chants or phrases that tend to fight the negativities around us and within
