Introduction
In a standard meditation practice, the individual usually remains conscious and works on one thing to pay attention to, such as breathing. Sometimes you’re sitting upright, and other times people prefer to lie down. However, most times, meditation requires an individual to stay completely awake and is used to help sleep, calm the mind, and let go of tension. Yoga Nidra meditation is quite different. When practicing Yoga Nidra, you must always ensure that you are lying down on a flat surface with your legs uncrossed and your hands at your sides. Yoga Nidra has eight stages that will take you from the state you are in right now to relaxation and to awareness of what is going on within you and outside of you. Unlike most meditations, Yoga Nidra is the state of unconscious awareness. What this means is that while you are guided through the process of meditation, you are fully aware of what is around you while, at the same time, you enter a state of a dream-like world. You don’t entirely go into sleep mode, but you do envision it and are in full control of your dream-like state.
