INTRODUCTION
Many of us have some clear ideas about anger. We view anger as destructive and harmful. We believe this is an inappropriate response. We equate anger with violence. In short, we feel that anger is just bad and that something is wrong with us when we are angry. Anger is not pleasant; anger is not polite and anger is certainly not our friend.
Anger can be one of those things. But anger is also valuable, necessary, and healing. We need our anger. We just need to learn to express our anger in an appropriate, conscious and supportive way. Anger in itself is neither good nor bad. It can be used to hurt or to heal. It might not be particularly a comfortable feeling, but it is an important feeling. We can all gain from experiencing the nature of anger.
Guy Williams, a minister of religious studies, offers an incredibly insightful way of understanding anger. Guy says anger comes from communication that is not delivered or from an expectation that is not met. Anger is a tertiary response; our first reactions are sadness and fear. First, we mourn the unfulfilled expectation. Then we fear that things will never change. After all, we are angry.
Few of us realize that anger can be a positive, healing response. When we experience anger, it focuses our minds and strengthens our resolve. We discover reserves of power and strength. Our anger gives us the boldness and ability to face our fear that things will never change by being angry.
Let's take an example. We expect our borders to be respected by others. When someone crosses a line, that expectation has not been met. The first thing we do is to grief and wait for others to respect our borders. We don't feel safe because our line has been broken. But we also experience fear. We feared that things would never change, that our borders would not protect us because other people would not respect them. But
