Chapter One: Early to Rise

Our store will open in an hour and we still have plenty to do to get things ready. Katie’s Farmer’s Market was my wife’s idea after I inherited my uncle’s five-hundred-acre farm. It is not a large parcel of land to till and care for, but enough to support the two of us and a source of pride for me. I love the beautiful countryside just a few miles outside of Bloomington, Indiana and I would not trade anything in the world for it.

These mornings are killing me, Katie says with a grimace as she stocks the shelves on one side of the small store with freshly canned jellies and jams from our farm. Five o’clock is too early to be here.

Well, we do open at seven, so I don’t know what we can do about that, honey. It takes time to get things where they belong. We rarely leave food inside the small store within the generally open-air market on a small strip of land just outside of the city. Much of what we have would go to spoil in a week or so anyway, with the exception of the canned goods on display inside. Still, most of what is here will be gone by tonight, thanks to the thriving business we have in the market.

It doesn’t bother you much, does it? Katie muses as she stops what she is doing and looks over at me. I have been working on getting a small colorful sign to light up for the better part of a half-hour.

What doesn’t?

The early hours. You always hop right out of bed and are ready to go in minutes. I need my morning coffee to be worth anything this early. Katie has been nursing a large Yeti container of coffee since we got here an hour ago. My guess is that it is almost gone and the effects of the caffeine have not been enough to put her into a better mood just yet.

I grew up farming with my uncle, I tell her. We were up during the summers by four in the morning. I sort of got used to it, I think.

Yay, you. Katie looks playfully at me with a warm smile on her face. At five-two, the hundred-pound spinner is petite and sexy. Just thirty years old, she seems even younger and more vibrant than most women her age. This could be due to the time she spent at Indiana University as a gymnast. Her small, muscular body is just what they wanted when they recruited her out of high school. There are still pictures and awards in the athletic center that include her and those she competed with. I wish I could have seen her during one of her competitions, but alas I was not in attendance there. As a matter of fact, I forewent college in order to get training in welding school so that I could work near my uncle’s farm in case he ever needed me.

You know you love this, I tell her. This market is everything to you.

Almost everything. Katie stands to her feet and walks over to where I am standing. She puts her arms around me and we kiss for a moment, her soft lips nipping at mine. How could I have been so lucky to find her?

You are so beautiful, I say quietly. Damn, I married up.

You bet you did. She giggles and turns to go back to what she was doing. I finally get the small electric sign to turn on and walk over to where the cash register is sitting and turn it on as well.

We had a good week last week, I comment as I look at the register tape in the drawer from then. I need to get this filed away before we lose it. Uncle Sam is going to want his part.

Katie rolls her eyes. This is a cash business, Mark. We don’t have to report everything to the government, you know.

I chuckle. That’s what my cousin thought when he opened a barber shop a few years ago. Look what happened to him.

Yeah, but he was too obvious about it, my wife replies. He was reporting just a few thousand dollars per year but driving around in a fifty-thousand-dollar SUV. He should have just owned an old car or truck and flown under the radar.

Jared was a little stupid about it, huh? I
