Good morning, I say to my wife as I walk into the kitchen.  The smell of toast and eggs in the air is a rare one since she rarely gets up to make any breakfast before I leave for work.  Are the kids up yet?

Not yet, Lauren replies.  I’ll get them up in a few minutes to get ready for school.  She makes me a plate of breakfast and sits it at the table for me.  I hope you are hungry.

I am, I reply with a smile on my face.  So, what’s the special occasion? I ask as I sit down to the surprise meal.

Lauren takes a seat next to me as I take my first bite.  She doesn’t have a plate of her own, only a cup of coffee to start her day.  No occasion, Brian.  I just wanted to spend a little time with you while the kids are not underfoot.

I laugh a little.  You know, they can get to be a real damper on our love life if we let them.  I love my children more than life itself, but for years they have seemed to have a sense of when I am in the mood for some private time with Lauren.  Any time we close our bedroom door, one or both of them come and knock on it and want to see us about something.  Seth is fifteen and Rachel is twelve.  You would think that kids that age could occupy themselves without bothering their parents while they are locked behind a closed door.

You know they hate that, Lauren replies.  I think they know what is going on, and they want to stop it.  Maybe they are afraid that we will have more kids.  We both laugh again as I take a bite of the eggs. 

These are really good, I tell her.  After having a sip of my own coffee, I ask my wife, What do you think about getting away this weekend?  I have Saturday off this time, and we could make a day of it.  It would be just you and me in a hotel room in Danport. 

This Saturday?  Lauren shakes her head.  "I’m not sure about this Saturday, Brian.  There is a lot going on that day."

Like what?

Well, for one, I am supposed to go with Cynthia to mall.

The mall?  I cock one eyebrow up as I tell Lauren, You are forty years old, honey.  Teenagers go to the mall.  You shop online.  I chuckle a little as I try to hide my disappointment that my wife would prefer to spend my one day off with her friend. 

They are going to have a grand opening of a couple of new shops there, Brian.  There will be almost eighty percent off items all over those stores and Cynthia wants to get in on the deals early.

Deals?  I shake my head.  Lauren, I am already working between seventy and eighty hours per week just to help make ends meet.  Why are you wanting to spend money at the mall?

Just a hundred dollars or so, she tells me with a smile.  Besides, I earn my own money too, you know.  This has been a bone of contention between the two of us for the last few years.  My wife has a part-time job doing what she has always wanted to do, which is to make gift baskets and sell them online and at craft shows, and at times she has done very well.  Unfortunately, she has not done so well with them over the last five or six years, and as a result I am forced to work a second job to help our family stay afloat.  Though I try not to allow my disdain for her lack of earnings bother me most of the time, the idea of spending the one hundred dollars that I will be expected to cover in some way through my own work irritates me. 

Please, honey, can you just consider going with me to a hotel this weekend?  We have the discount coupons from my sister to stay at the new hotel there.  It would be less than thirty dollars for a night.

Brian, I really don’t want to go spend the night in Danport.  There is nothing to do there.

"You can do me there, I retort as I put my fork down in my plate.  Lauren, we haven’t gone out together in so long and this is a chance for us to get a little time to ourselves.  After all, I’m slated to work for the next twenty days straight between the two jobs, so this is the only day I am getting off for a while."

My wife’s blue eyes turn from me to the smart phone she is holding in her hand.  Lauren always has it with her and it seems that she is always texting with a friend or checking statuses on some social media site.  I’ve grown so tired of seeing her holding her phone that I have resorted to occasionally hiding it from her just to force her to spend more time talking to me than to her friends.  Unfortunately, the ploy rarely works since she seems to be able to find it within minutes of it going missing.  Looking at me, Lauren says, You can come with us to the grand opening, Brian.  I’m sure there will be things there for guys as well.

I shake my head as I sit back in my chair.  Sure, there will be things for guys.  Maybe a nice pastel lip shade for me is just what I need.  Or maybe some hair ties or a ribbon.

"They are not those sorts of shops, Brian."
