Dinner is served, I say to the kids as I walk through the front door.

Daddy is home! my son yells out as he hops up from in front of the television.  He and his little sister have been playing a game on a console. 

Give me a hand with these bags, David, I tell him as I hold one of the large plastic bags out toward him.  Careful, though, the sauces are in there.  My oldest smiles at me as he turns and walks toward the kitchen, followed just behind by his sister Abigail.

Abby, don’t get too close, David tells her.  You might knock the bag out of my hand!  At twelve years old, he is sometimes more grown up than he ought to be.  Our first child, he is four years older than Abigail and the complete opposite of her when it comes to his personality.  He has never met a stranger, and my little girl is somewhat timid around others.  Their personalities seem to mimic their parents’, which is actually very interesting when we go out in public.  Some people have claimed that I am spending time turning David into my exact image, while they then claim that my wife is doing the same with Abigail.  However, nothing could be further from the truth.

Hey, you got home early.  Tiffany smiles broadly at me as she walks up and gives me a kiss.  My wife is thirty-seven years old but looks like a woman ten years younger.  Short and petite, her dark hair and eyes perfectly accent the tone of her skin.  I thought you had more meetings this afternoon.

No, we got those wrapped up early.  I hand another bag to Tiffany, the woman I have been married to for the last fourteen years.  I hope Chinese is okay."

Szechuan? I nod.  You know me so well.  Tiffany smiles warmly toward me as she turns and walks toward the dining room.

We both get plates, silverware, and drink cups ready as David and Abigail remove the food from the bags.  Be careful with that, I tell them as I reach over my wife to get another plate.

Mr. Anderson, is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just really happy to see me?  My wife laughs a little as she pushes her ass into my crotch.

Damn, honey, I mutter into her ear before kissing her neck.  You know you shouldn’t do that in front of the kids.  I might end up grabbing your boobs or something.

Grab them, she dares me with a giggle.  Maybe I will grab you back.  It’s the sort of playful banter Tiffany and I share on a daily basis.  We are in love with each other, and our kids have the opportunity to see how a happily married couple gets along.  The years have been kind to us as I have started my own insurance agency and Tiffany has been promoted to charge nurse at the city hospital.  With two incomes that together form a tidy sum of money, the kids want for nothing and we enjoy taking vacations occasionally as a family.  At least, we go places together when our work allows.

Honey, Tiffany says as she walks toward the dining room table.  There’s something I need to talk to you about.

My heart sinks a little.  I have a feeling that this is about another meeting over the weekend, huh?

Tiffany nods her head.  Jason, if I thought that I could get out of it this time, I would.  The administrators at the hospital feel that this is a very important conference to attend, though.  I have to go.

Where is this conference? I ask her as I set the plates on the table.

Atlanta, she replies with a strained look on her face.  Tiffany knows how I feel about Atlanta. 

How long?

Three days.  The quake in her voice tells me that my wife is uncertain how I will take the news.  For the past few weekends, the hospital as well as the medical group that it is a part of has been sending its employees to conferences and trainings in preparation for some changes that are coming to patient care.  Though I understand this is supposed to be a good thing for the community in the end, it is definitely not a good thing for our family.

Three fucking days, I seethe under my breath as I place some plates on the table.

The kids, Tiffany says quietly into my ear.  Language, dear.  She doesn’t like when I use rough language around our children, and occasionally my wife feels the need to remind me to be mindful of what I say in their presence.

But, three days, honey.  When is this going to end?  I look at her with inquisitorial eyes while trying to pull some kind of reasonable answer from her.  Every damned weekend.

"Not every weekend, she corrects me.  It has been four weekends out of the last six.  She smiles gently at me and adds, This will end soon, Jason.  I promise.  It’s just that I have to do this for a while until the hospital admins feels that we are ready for everything they plan to do with the hospital."  Tiffany, once again, makes it incredibly difficult for me to be upset with her.  This is not her fault, after all, and it is a bit unfair of me to treat her as if she is intentionally abandoning her husband and kids.  She is right; there will come an end to this eventually.  Surely, I can wait a little longer.

Fine, I say while I shake my head.  Just be careful when you go, okay?  Are there others going with you?

A couple of nurses and a doctor, she replies.  We are spearheading the training so that we can bring it back to the rest of the staff.

You had better get that fucking raise, honey.

Language, Tiffany quickly replies with a grimace.  Abby is watching.  I turn to see my daughter peering over the table top at me. 

Is it ready? She asks with a concerned look on her face.  Abigail is not used to seeing her parents quarrel.

It’s ready, Tiffany tells her.  The two of you should wash up and have a seat at the table. 

David, we get to eat! Abigail squeals as she skips toward the kitchen to wash her hands.  Her brother does the same, and soon they are both sitting down with my wife and I at the dinner table. 

So, how has your day gone, David? I say to my son just after I take a quick bite of my food.

He shrugs his shoulders.  It’s been okay.  I’m sick of school. 

I laugh a little as I look over at Tiffany before replying to David.  Well, I suppose there were times that I got a little tired of school too when I was your age.  The thing is, you won’t spend your entire life in a classroom, son.  This is all just a time of training for you.

Like Mom, he says before taking a drink of water.

I look at my wife again.  She does have more training to do, David.  We will need to just keep on being supportive of her.

It’s just a while longer, Tiffany comments.  Soon this will all be over, and things will go back to normal.  I promise.  She turns her brown eyes toward me while adding, I guess I will have to really make up for being gone so much when I am finished going to these meetings out of town.

Smiling a little I almost choke on a piece of spring roll.  Tiffany and I have had some great sex while making up to each other in the past.  I look forward to having her make up lost time with me in the coming weeks.  So, I sold several large insurance policies today.

Daddy, nobody wants to hear about that.  Abigail gives a strained look at me as I begin to laugh at her direct comment. 

Well, pardon me, I say as I wink at her.  Maybe your day was better?

My daughter nods her head.  I got married. 

David drops the fork he is holding on top of his plate.  Married?  Abby, you’re only eight.  You can’t get married at your age.
