It is after nine o’clock in the evening before Heidi walks through the front door of our home and I am waiting for her on the sofa.  Well, long time no see, stranger, I say with a smile.

My wife grimaces while shaking her head.  Stranger, huh?  I think you might have something there.  She walks over to where I am and has a seat beside me after putting away her valise.  As the head psychiatrist in the largest hospital in the city, Heidi is responsible for everything that happens there as it pertains to those suffering mental emergencies.  There was a suicidal young woman there tonight.  I didn’t think we would ever talk her into going calmly into the behavioral health ward.

I look over into her dark blue eyes and consider how dedicated my wife is to her patients.  You have a lot more patience than I have, my love, I admit.  If someone came into a hospital and refused to calm down, I might have someone just give them a sedative and put them into a straight jacket.

No, Pierce, you can’t do that if they are willing to get help on their own.  She was distraught, but not out of control.  Heidi raises an eyebrow at me.  Besides, you should know that there are lawsuits that happen when someone gets too heavy handed with a patient, right?

I chuckle.  I could defend you as well as the hospital, honey.  I’ve done it dozens of times before.  Smiling, I put a hand around my wife’s shoulders and think about how beautiful she is.  As a full partner at a law firm, I too have lots of work on my plate, including cases in which I am defending a large retail business against a class action lawsuit.  Though the company I represent should not have sold a certain product for an additional three years after discovering that it was defective, they also should not be on the hook for nearly a billion dollars worth of claims.  We will settle soon, for about a third of the amount sought after.  As for me and my partner at the law firm, it will mean a payday of around fifty million dollars.

Or, I could simply talk someone down and convince them to cooperate.  That could be less expensive.  Heidi smiles before leaning in to kiss me.  Our lips lock onto each other and I can taste the warmth of my wife’s tongue.  I love her so much.  She loves me back, and that is all that matters to me.  If only we could spend more time together as a couple.

You know, I was thinking, I say as we pull away from each other for a moment.  We could take next week off and relax somewhere together.  Just the two of us.

Next week?  Heidi shakes her head.  That’s short notice, Pierce.  I don’t know that the administration at the hospital would be okay with that.

My big case should be over by then, and it will likely be the only chance that I have to get away for the next few months.  You know how my schedule can sometimes be, honey.

And my schedule as well, she admits.  Still, it’s quick notice.  I’m not sure I can pull it off.

I sigh.  You have lots of other people there who can cover for you, Heidi.  You know that this is doable.  I stare hard into my wife’s face as I watch her think about the suggestion concerning next week.  What could it hurt?  We go for a week and then come back."

But to where? she asks.  I don’t know that I want to go spend a week on the ocean, Pierce.  We went there last time and it rained a lot.

Yeah, I know, I reply.  Maybe we could come up with a place to go where we don’t have to worry about all the rain?

Vegas, Heidi says almost immediately with a grin.  We haven’t been there in more than two years.

Las Vegas?  I grimace a little as I think about Sin City and all the lights.  For my part, I have always enjoyed getting away to someplace that is quieter and less hectic.  Not my wife.  She loves to see the lights and hear the sounds of the desert city.

You know you want to go, she replies.  "Come on, Pierce,
