I look up at the wall in the small office and read the time on the clock.  Six-fifteen, I mutter as I shake my head.  It has now been more than twelve hours since I opened the restaurant for the holiday meal.  Thanksgiving sucks, I chuckle as I get up from my chair and walk out of the office.  The smell of turkey, dressing, and all of the other side items a person might expect in a thanksgiving meal cause my stomach to turn a little.  After several hours of having to deal with the aroma, I am tired of it and I wish people would just go home.

It’s busier than I expected.  I turn to see my wife standing just to my side.  A beautiful woman of twenty-eight, Lisa stands just five-two and probably weighs a little over one hundred pounds.  Her dark brown hair put back in a ponytail along with her dark blue eyes make her look even younger as she smiles at me.

Yeah, busy, I grimace.

Cheer up, Thomas, she laughs.  I’m doing really well today and you should be happy for me.

I would be happier if the owner had decided to allow us to close for the day.  Instead, I am forced to smell that fucking turkey all day long.  Even when I came in this morning the cooks were already cooking it.

Mr. Logan wants the restaurant open because of this.  Lisa motions toward the hundred or so people sitting throughout the large dining hall.  We are busier today than we have been over the last several weeks.

I nod my head in agreement.  Yeah, it’s hard to beat the numbers coming in for today.  I’m amazed at how many people would prefer to eat at a restaurant for Thanksgiving than to make the meal at home for their families.  This is only the second year we have been open for the holiday and apparently word has spread since last year that we are the place to be for some of the finest turkey.  Still, I hate that we have to be open on a day like today.  What’s next?  Christmas?

Hey, I think if things go really well in my second shift I may have enough in tips for that Michael Kors bag that I have been looking at, Lisa tells me.  I’m excited.

Ugh, the bag, I laugh as I shake my head.  My wife and I are not exactly wealthy but we make do with what we have.  Unfortunately the housing in this area is expensive and sometimes we find ourselves struggling to enjoy the smaller things in life.  How much is it again?

Three hundred dollars, my wife gushes.  Can you imagine me carrying one of those with me when we go see your family for Christmas?

Yeah, I can imagine what my mother would say, I laugh.  She will wonder where the hell we got the money for it.  You know how she can be with things that cost so much.

Lisa frowns.  Well, we don’t have to worry about what she thinks, then, do we?  I think Margaret and Tonja will like it.  Margaret and Tonja are my sisters.  They are both much better off than my wife and I, which often bothers Lisa.  Whenever we see my sisters and their families they have something else that is nicer and newer than anything we have.  It really is not surprising, though, as Margaret married a surgeon and Tonja married an attorney.  Of course they have money.  We often do not.

Just be careful what you do to get those tips, I caution my wife.  You know how the other servers here hate that I’m your boss, right?

Mr. Logan hired me, she replies.  You had nothing to do with it.

Well, technically, I did.  I told him you were my wife and that you had applied for the job and I thought he would just toss the application into the trash.  I think he hired you to make me happy.  After all, he doesn’t pay me very much to be the manager.  Mr. Logan and I have had some interesting conversations in the past about what skills I bring to the restaurant team.  Though I have several years of experience in restaurant management, the owner feels that I am paid plenty for my job.  It is my belief that he
