Chapter One: A Churning Life

I sometimes come home in a terrible mood. That’s the price one pays for having the sort of career that I have in a bank’s corporate office as an accounts analyst. The last week has seen an uptick in problematic accounting by a new system we installed just six months ago and this morning an account holder suddenly went from having three hundred dollars in their account to more than thirty thousand dollars. Needless to say, the account holder was very pleased, but bank executives were not. It’s become my task to fix these problems whenever they come up, and I’m quickly tiring of having to deal with them.

What’s for dinner? I ask Laney as I walk into the living room and give her a kiss on the cheek. I sit down beside her and attempt to muster some sort of smile. My wife is beautiful, blonde haired and blue eyed, as well as a spinner at just five-four and a hundred twenty pounds. Her beautiful eyes were the first things I noticed about her in college before asking her out while in a business class. We were both majors in the same department, albeit working toward slightly different degrees.

Dinner? I just got home, Adrian, she chuckles. If you want to call out for something…

Nah, just forget it, I say as I become a little aggravated. We have a mutual understanding that whomever gets home first will start dinner. It is then that we often work together to get it done. However, it seems that Laney isn’t keen on such an idea this evening.

Mad at me now? she asks as she looks over at me.

Mad? No. It’s fine. I’ll make a sandwich or something, I tell her as I get up from my seat and walk toward the kitchen. The mood in the room is a bit cool as I make my way to the refrigerator.

I’m sorry, Your Highness, she mutters as she follows me into the kitchen. I’ll get right to work on something. Laney reaches into a cabinet nearby and pulls out a can of some mixed vegetables.

I’m good, I tell her again. I’m working on a sandwich for dinner. I really wanted one of those anyway. It’s not a problem. I offer my wife a conciliatory smile, though I doubt that it looks all that convincing to her. It’s likely that I am still offending her as she reaches for the can opener and begins to work on the can of vegetables.

Laney huffs a little as she works her fingers around the turning knob of the can opener. Fucking piece of shit.

Here, let me, I say to her after I put two pieces of wheat bread on a small plate on the counter top. My fingers also have trouble with the old can opener and I wonder where the hell the newer one happens to be. We can never find the new one. Why the hell are we always using this old piece of crap?

It’s not my fault, Laney replies gruffly. You were the one who unloaded the dishwasher last time. It was in there. Did you put it in the right drawer? My wife reaches around me and opens a drawer nearby. It’s supposed to be in here, Adrian. That’s where it’s been since we bought it. I can’t find it now and I think you might have put it in the wrong spot. Or lost it.

Lost it to where? retort as I finally get the top off the can. I don’t exactly try to lose things around here, honey. You know that I’m a pretty organized guy.

Until you need to do the dishes. Then it’s a real shit-show around here. My wife’s blue eyes look sharply at me. I’m making dinner, Adrian. Put the fucking bread away.

No, I say forcefully. For one, I didn’t lose the fucking can opener. For another, I want a fucking sandwich. Thinking for a moment, I then ask, Would you like me to make you one as well, sweetheart? The way I say sweetheart to her causes my wife’s face to contort a little and turn red. I’ve pissed her off. I’m glad, at least in part.

Never mind. I’ll just throw these out. She picks up the open can of vegetables and pours them into the food disposal in the sink before turning it on and rinsing the yellow, orange, and green bits down.
