Hey, Tracy, I say to my receptionist as I walk through the waiting room at my chiropractic office.  I am going next door to see how my wife is doing this morning.  Do you think you can hold things down here while I am out?

The young woman, a recent university graduate who has worked for me since her Junior year, replies, Sure, Dr. Lane.  I’ll see you when you get back.  I smile back at her before opening the office door and walking out onto the sidewalk.  Janet, my wife of nearly ten years, has been the head librarian at the city’s library for the last five years.  As a matter of fact, I bought my chiropractic office at around the same time she got the job and since then we have been next door to each other every day.  This arrangement has allowed me to walk over to see Janet whenever I wanted to as long as I don’t have any patients with appointments waiting for me.  Today happens to be a slow day, so it is a good time to go see her.

As I open the library door, I can see Janet sitting just behind the checkout desk. 

Good morning, sexy, I say to her with a smile on my face as I walk up to her. 

Good morning, sweetheart, she replies.  The smile on her face is almost nonexistent as she nods her head toward me.  Something is out of sorts with her and it bothers me to see her like this again.

What is it this time? I ask.

Janet sighs as she looks at the large computer screen in front of her.  This new software program is garbage, Lane, she replies.  Moving her fingers along a few keys on the keyboard as she also points and clicks the mouse to her right, my wife tells me, The library board decided that it was time to change from the old system to a new one so that we would have the same program as what is used by the local school district.

And it’s not working out so great for you?

She shakes her head, the ponytail of long brown hair on the back of her head situated just so.  "It’s shit, Lane.  Complete and utter shit."

Oh.  I’ve seen my wife upset with some of the other things the library board has been up to recently and I hate that she continues to deal with whatever new thing they decide to throw upon her.  Let me look at it.  I walk behind the desk and bend over to take a look at the screen.  It looks simple enough, I say without thinking first.

Well, maybe I am just too stupid to understand it, then.  Janet’s reaction is sharp as she pushes her chair away from the desk. 

I’m sorry, I reply.  You know I didn’t mean it the way it sounded.

My wife shrugs her shoulders.  I’m sure the board thinks that much of me, though.  I have put through two calls this morning to the IT person at the state office and I guess they have called Cecilia Johnson.  She contacted me a few minutes ago and suggested that maybe I should consider going back to college.

What?  I shake my head.  Isn’t she the board president?

Yeah.  Doesn’t that sound nice of her?  I’m getting put down by the library board president.  Janet huffs as she waves a hand toward the computer screen.  No matter what I do, it doesn’t work.  This damned thing lags and then tries to freeze up on me.  They say it probably has something to do with the way I am using it, but when I ask them to show me how to do it better I get the runaround.  Honestly, I don’t think the IT guy knows a fucking thing about it.  Janet suddenly looks up and around after making the comment.  I have to be careful about what I say out loud.  All I need is for a library patron to call the board about me.

I sigh.  It looks a little like what I use in the office.  Let me see what I can do.  I move the mouse around and click on a couple of things.  The program seems to respond well and I am able to open some of the tabs.  Periodicals is a tab that seems to open very slowly, though.  Maybe they have a problem on the other end.

Maybe it’s the fact that my computer is eight years old, Janet quips.

Wait a minute.  They actually installed a new program but they want you to use an outdated computer to run it?

Funny how they prioritize things, huh? 

I turn and look at the screen of the computer.  Woops.

What do you mean by that?  Janet moves her chair closer to the desk and looks hard at the screen.  Oh, fuck, Lane.  What did you do?

I don’t know, I respond.  I was just opening this tab and it went haywire.

Fuck!  My wife doesn’t bother to look around this time as she makes a fist and raps the desktop hard.  Dammit, why did you do that?

Honey, I didn’t mean to do anything to it.  I just clicked on a tab.

Fuck.  I don’t want to call that asshole again, Lane.  Janet’s eyes fill with tears.  I think they are going to write me up if I can’t get a handle on this.
