Chapter One: Old Times

I’m not always one for parties, but when my old college buddies decide to come into town with their families, I can’t turn down a mini-reunion with them. How are the hotdogs coming along? I ask Brenton as I walk up to where he’s standing next to a grill. He’s agreed to hold this little get-together at his home since he has the largest yard and the nicest grill.

They’re getting there, he says with a wide smile. His reddish beard glistens in the sunlight as he tends to the hotdogs. I wonder why he ever decided to grow that thing out for summer?

The kids are starving, Devin, another friend of ours, says as he walks up with a bottle of beer in one hand. My kids are going apeshit for Uncle Brenton’s world famous hotdogs.

World famous, eh? Brenton smiles at the complement. I think your two little ones would probably eat just about anything, Devin. Sort of like you. We all three laugh as Devin shakes his head. Though not out of shape, he has put on a few pounds over the last couple of years. It’s good to see him, though. Living more than three hundred miles away in Texas caused me to wonder if he would be able to make it at all.

Well, they love your hotdogs. So, pronto, Uncle Brenton. Get them ready for the little rascals. Devin smiles as he turns to point at our other friends who have shown up for the backyard party. You would think that Luther and Aiden have no dicks the way they fawn over their wives. Honestly, not one of them has come over to say hello to us yet.

They’ll get here, I tell my old friend. Give them a chance to get things settled with their families first. The wives, after all, are the true bosses of our homes.

Here-here, Brenton agrees as he lifts a bottle of beer toward me. I do the same and he takes a quick drink of it.

Not my wife. She does what I want her to do. Devin seems very defiant as he looks into my eyes.

Really? Let’s just see how much you have her in your spell, buddy. Hey, Katie? Can you come over here.

Dammit, Jordan. Do you really have to make a point whenever I say something?

But, this is an important something, I say with a chuckle as Brenton smiles along with me. I watch as Katie makes her way to the grill.

Hello boys, she says with a smile on her face. The young woman puts her arm around Devin and kisses him on the cheek.

I was hoping you could help us figure something out, I say as I try to hold back the laughter that is about to erupt from within me.

Um, okay. Shoot. Katie is always a good sport whenever I do something to embarrass her husband. Hopefully she will play along now as well.

Devin seems to be under the impression that he’s the boss in your home. I smile wickedly at the two of them.

I didn’t say it like that, Devin says in his defense. He looks at Katie and tells her, He’s just trying to get something started. Ignore him.

The boss? his wife parrots. What do you mean?
