Chapter One: An Unexpected Friend

I liked the ending, my wife argues as we walk out of the Broadway play we have just attended this evening. It is our eighth anniversary and we have been looking forward to a nice time out together.

Lara, it was a silly ending for a play that right up until the end seemed to be a serious work of art. I loved everything right up until the last five minutes.

Oh, please Coy. You know they had to tie things up before the show was over.

But five minutes? Come on, surely they could have done something a bit less dramatic than kill off the main character with a flock of seagulls.

My wife laughs at me. They were supposed to be vultures, my love.

I chuckle while shaking my head. Well, the vultures behaved more like seagulls, Lara. I really wish I had not seen it now. We continue to argue playfully about what we have each seen tonight as we turn a corner and walk toward the car. The closer parking lots were full by the time we arrived for the play this evening, so I was forced to find a spot down a seedy street where I could leave the car. However, I did not realize until just now what kind of mistake that decision was for us.

Stop. A quiet, yet authoritative voice speaks directly at us from a darkened doorway. The figure soon steps out into the dim light of the city street and approaches us. Your money and your jewelry.

What? I put my wife behind me as I squint my eyes and look hard at the hooded figure. We don’t have anything. Just leave us alone.

I see a quick glimmer of metal as the mugger pulls something out of his waistband. Just after, another figure appears at his side and also appears to have something shiny. We will cut you, the second mugger growls as he raises his weapon just enough for me to make out that he is holding a six-inch knife. My heart begins to race as I think about telling Lara to run. As I consider our chances of escaping the two nefarious individuals, I remember that my wife is wearing high heels. There is no way she can get away on foot. So, I slowly begin to reach for my wallet as one of the men gets closer.

FUCK! The closer of the two muggers suddenly staggers back as I hit him across the face. I’m not sure why I would do this, but as he got close to me I felt inclined to do something to get him away from us. This was a mistake, though, as the second man quickly moves to grasp Lara and put a knife blade to her throat.

COY! she calls out desperately. ‘

WAIT! I pull my wallet from my pocket and look at the two men. Here. Have it all. I toss the leather billfold to the pavement and raise my hands. Please, just don’t hurt her.

Cut the woman, the mugger who I hit says to his partner.

No, don’t! Just as I feel the hilt of the first man’s knife strike me across the face, I see a third figure in the dark take hold of the criminal who is holding my wife.

Ahhh!!! The man yells out as the dark figure who has taken hold of him takes the knife from him and pummels his face several times. The mugger falls to the ground and his friend approaches the third man with his knife. He swipes the blade at him, but the stranger moves too quickly and lands a quick punch across the mugger’s face, causing him to fall to the ground stunned.

This way! He takes Lara’s hand and pulls her with him as I follow close behind. We make our way all the way back to the front of the Broadway theater. Back there, along the street there are two men, our new friend says to a pair of police officers standing along the street. They tried to mug these people. The officers turn and run down the street toward the unconscious offenders. For our part, my wife and I attempt to make sense of what has just happened.

Who are you? she asks the tall young man who is still holding her hand tightly.

He smiles nervously. My name is Brett. I am a stagehand worker for the show.

The play? I ask. He nods his head as he looks over at me. Realizing that he is still holding Lara’s hand, he quickly drops it and sits back on a car along the street.

My heart is racing, he tells us with a strained look on his face. It has been a few years since I had to fight like that.

My wife nods her head. You really handled yourself great back there; thank you so much. Do you train as a fighter?

Brett chuckles. I’m a Marine, he tells her as he shakes his head. I spent a year in Afghanistan.

Oh. I pat the stagehand’s shoulder and reply, Well, thank you so much for what you did for us down the street. Had you not come up when you did, I’m not sure what would have happened to my wife.

I would have been killed, Lara posits. You should have just given them what they wanted, Coy. After you hit that one guy, the other one was about to cut my throat.

Honey, I don’t think he would have…

How can you know? Lara has gone from thankfulness to an accusatory attitude as she glares at me. Coy, you are not exactly a fighter.
